So like the Freeform channel is doing a special 25th anniversary thing for Hocus Pocus with guests and bands and I feel like it's a bit gratuitous. But also I'm watching it and not going anywhere

Catching up on Doctor Who from this past weekend. If there's one thing I'm loving it's that they're leaning into the Doctor's empathy for the "monsters"
And I was thinking I wouldn't see the point of an old white guy tagging along with the Doctor, but Graham is really winning me over.
@pixelpaperyarn Yeah, like she's off & running as an amazing Doctor, but Graham's more character than companions usually show
Dang it, it's November here now. Time to start planning for next year, I guess.
@CatFacts Gimme a fact to cheer me up
@ceejbot FWIW, my botpub thingy is a start on an activitypub implementation in JS - albeit hosted on AWS Lambda at the moment. Might have some stuff for you to look at though
@CatFacts hi
@CatFacts Are you broken?
@CatFacts Tell me another!
Oof. Lost my cable internet just after deploying @CatFacts with a schedule to send out one fact per minute.
Tethered to my phone real quick to turn that down a bit. At least it wasn't like once per second.
The way to fight farts in elevators is more farts in the elevator.
Weird: Noticed my AWS bill spiked from $1 to $6 in October. Poked through logs and found what looks like one Mastodon instance just GET'ing the hell out of the actor resource for Insultron over the course of 4 days.
@muffinista Not at all! Looks like botsin.space barely hit my resources
I mean, $1 or $6, not a huge deal. But part of my tinkering is to see how dirt cheap I can make ActivityPub explorations. And a 6x spike in cost over a 4 day period is kind of eyebrow-raising. Need to investigate more
@ed2 Yeah, this was like a crapton of requests to a cached static HTTP GET resource via AWS CloudFront. Should be nearly the cheapest thing in the stack
Oh holy shit. I figured it out. đ đ
Insultron and @fedibash got into a reply loop thanks to a toot by @tuxcrafting
Well, that'll teach me not to let my bots talk to other bots and neglect my logs for a few days. Lessons learned, mistakes were made, yadda yadda
Thankfully, my new versions on botpub identify as Service actors and skip interacting with non-Person actors. The old version of insultron has been retired.
@tuxcrafting Hahaha, no worries, well played.
@tuxcrafting My bot shouldn't, like, you know, do that
Kind of alarming, but also kind of funny to see my bot repeatedly insulting a command line on my birthday.

Also FWIW, @dean I'm really sorry my bot spammed your bot!
I should also look into adding more usage alarms to my cloudwatch setup.
This probably could have been caught just by noticing that, you know, my queue jobs jumped up by several orders of magnitude.
A thing I struggle with: giving (or whether at all to give) a compliment - like *not* "you are appealing and I want something from you" but "whatever you're doing is working, thank you for being here"
I mean wah-wah straight cis white guy - we're a known shady bunch. Suspicion & side-eye by default is fair.
But honestly I am just super happy when folks are comfy & happy. I don't have another angle.
@garbados make sure to submit your expense receipts to soros!
That thing where "{name} is typing" but {name} should have stopped typing.
So, I just realized that this new desktop PC that I got has an old-school PS/2 keyboard socket in the back.
This means I can hook up one of my old IBM Model M keyboards with no USB adapter or whatnot.
TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA (this is strangely theraputic to me today)
I have a Model M that I built a quick & dirty internal USB controller board for.
But, that board needs some work... like, CTRL-W doesn't work, along with some other key combinations. That puts a damper on using to actually work.
This keyboard via PS/2, though... it's working great.
(It's also very helpful that I work from home and my co-workers are cats sleeping in the other room.)
@csalzman I think I used a Teensy++ 2.0 for that. It can run the TMK open source keyboard firmware http://a.co/d/3gvRgXj
@rotatingskull@sunbeam.city Ah yeah, that's true. I was just trying to do this real quick with my Android phone
@csalzman Oh, yup, and I blogged about it too! Ideally, whatever you do for an Apple extended keyboard is less intrusive :) I pulled out and fully replaced the internal circuit board. You might be able to do the same thing just by converting the signals from the cable.
