@koosli Yeah, sometimes I just turn them all on and soak in the radiation!

@pizzacat Yeah, it's probably one of those things that's easily fixed if you have the time and lack-of-exhaustion to learn about it and figure it out - which is a whole job & a thing.

I'd say definitely consider eBay or something before throwing it out - but of course that's a whole job & a thing too :)

@ChaosSkeleton Catsby on the left is a bit of a long boi. Cosmo in the middle is surprisingly tiny. But Cheddars on the right is definitely a chonky girl. She gets what she wants

@PsyChuan @ChaosSkeleton Cheddars makes a good shrimp too

This is an important duck tiktok

@th Oh dang, I've lost so many eBay auctions for Model M space savers :) Really want to pick one up someday

@th But, yeah, that's my trackball too :) I've got two of those, one with a glowy ball and one without that I thought about putting an 8-ball in for awhile

Anyone have any favorite hosts for super cheap, tiny linux VMs?

I want something on a public IP that I can use to forward ports from machines at home. Like, for a telnet BBS or some webhooks. (Admittedly, this might be a terrible idea.)

Lowest tier AWS & GCP VMs are more than I want to bother with. $5/mo on DigitalOcean is a bit more than I want to spend.

Looked at lowendbox.com and found some $15-20/year offers but everything there smells like an ISK doubling scam in Jita on EVE Online.

For awhile, I was hosting a telnet BBS from a Raspberry PI in my office. Had a free toy Google Cloud VM that the Pi ssh'd to and used remote forward to open some ports. They started charging for public IPs, IIRC and I shut it down.

Holy shit. Someone named Isabel Fall took "I sexually identify as an attack helicopter" as a writing prompt and produced one of the most fabulous cyberpunk, post-human, trans-human mindfucks I've read in a long time. This is extremely my shit

I mean, seriously:

"the moment society was ready to accept plastic gender, and scientists were ready to manipulate itβ€”the military found a new resource. Armed with functional connectome mapping and neural plastics, the military can make gender tactical."

Really wish Slack had an "only notify me every 5, 10, 20, 60 minutes" option.

Like, when a DM thread is active and it takes me a bit to get to it, I get constant DING DING DING DING notifications that just sends my anxiety soaring.

And like heaven forfend if multiple DM threads are active. Then, even if I've checked one and am actively sitting at my desk participating, things ding all over the place for the other ones.

And to add to that the non-zero number of times that active DM threads mean Shit is Going Down, I feel like I'm well-trained to gear-shift straight to dread-and-doom when that cute little brush-block sound triggers

i hate that cute little fucking brush-block sound.

(okay, think I'm done venting, sorry)

@mdhughes Yeah, I probably need to invest in a timer habit.

With my probable ADHD, "when I feel like it" turns into "next week when my boss actually calls me on the phone and wonders where I've been on chat because I fixated on other things and forgot chat was a thing"

@craigmaloney I too have a real big sad

Neil Peart

Like, parasocial relationships are so fuckin weird.

Never met Neil Peart. He'd probably never have wanted to meet me - y'know, "I can't pretend a stranger / Is a long awaited friend"

Still, there's what feels like a family-shaped hunk of my brain reserved for him.

Neil Peart

Prince, Bowie, Peart... feels a bit like losing weird uncles.
