Also had some helpers for the tinkering
@skie Nice thing is you can always migrate over to a different home in the fediverse if that one looks troublesome. It's not without some wrinkles, but it's fairly immune to acquisition by Tony Stark wannabes
@vkc :blobwave:
Augh. I went months without feeling any enthusiasm toward programming in my spare time. Now I have like a half-dozen ideas that I feel compelled to work on immediately, most of which they're not paying me for. So, I really need my brain to help me defer those enthusiasms for later thanks
@mood@jorts.horse brb, off to write a story about parents who apologize with the gift of a new house and a basket of avocados as a housewarming present
Has anyone ever made an oracle deck from TV Tropes dot org? Now I kind of want to make a web page that "draws" three tropes for a reading https://tvtropes.org/
Like, the Tarot is totally TV Tropes from a long time ago
@rgegriff holy crap i forgot about the pineapples
@thegibson @tek This gif I found is probably from somewhere terrible, but it's kind of how I picture server admins
@administrator Yeah, that bit's ironic for me anyway
@vkc You'll probably get a different answer from different folks, but IMO there's the visibility option on posts and I try not to boost anything that's not "Public". I'll also avoid anything with a content warning just because
Also pleased to notice that my only user-facing contribution to Mastodon is still in the code base. Having the timeline move out from under my mouse pointer with updates is still one of my biggest peeves with Twitter / Tweetdeck
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/commit/6a1216d2cd1c26c22baf86ae618a62aa66817239
Part of me wants to start making dumb activitypub bots again
@haku_thebestboy IMO, self-hosting an instance is fun until it isn't. Especially if you're a dummy and accidentally delete all the database tables. Like someone I know. Who is me.
Back when I first joined Twitter in 2006, it was kind of like a single disconnected Mastodon instance but mostly just for folks talking about their lunch in the SF Bay Area. Since I also lived there at the time, it felt very relevant
Alright folks, it's time to... FORK THE ALGORITHM. It's just like 1998 all over again when Mozilla released the browser source code!
(just kidding, it's nothing like that)
I dunno, maybe I'll be surprised and there'll be a Code Rush 2 doco out in a few years on how this was the start of something big. At that point I'll probably be too senile to care
@drwho I suddenly want to stockpile some eggs for my family...
@thegibson @republic2809 @dcryp7s @liz :blobwave:
@wraithan Haha, one of my activitypub bots got into a reply-loop with someone else's bot a few years ago and cost me a whole $10 on AWS lambda 😅
@wraithan But yeah, I also spent hours & hours in college tinkering with IRC bots for no good reason
@andyc Thing is, I have known folks for whom the answer would have been yes for both the laptop or the human
@chartier This, right here, this is the take
Oh BTW, I'm still grinding away at that daily creative writing habit. This was last night's result, about these sorta lemur critters I dreamed about once
Also, I tried to write a break-up scene and couldn't get "Perish" by Curve out of my head. I'm not sure it works very well
@direlog have you tried using sage to cleanse these appliances?
Also I wonder how terribly awful an idea it would be to run my activitypub bots from a raspberry pi in my basement with a port forwarded out to a lil gateway host I use for a bunch of things? 🤔
I had used AWS Lambda for my last run at bots as a serverless learning project. But, I'm not using Lambda for anything these days
The bad part with Lambda was, when my bots went haywire I got charged more money. Bad part with a raspberry pi in my basement is someone could steal all my apes?
(and by apes i mean episodes from all 17 seasons of How It's Made that I've hoarded on my NAS)
@djsundog it is time to go check the hashtags once again
Also this serves as a fine window onto my life as any #mastocats #cats #retrocomputing
