Re-watched Strange Days (1995) and I forgot how much I obsessed over that soundtrack in college. Even if it did have Deep Forest on it. Really good cyberpunk story, even if it only has one piece of tech in it. Also really messes with my head that the future was 22 years ago.

@tankgrrl Looks like a toasty fire to me :)

@socketwench ugh, yeah, very good point

@Jo I had forgotten that and my brain went ping when I saw that scene last night. Seems like movie samples in music has really fallen out of fashion (or been sued out of existence) and I miss that feeling sometimes

Random daydream: I asked a genie for one of those 12-foot skeletons for my yard but forgot to stipulate I didn't want to modify my actual internal skeleton currently in use for my body

One thing I miss on mastodon from bird site is the ability to quickly look up a gif reaction.

But also maybe it’s fine sometimes not to speak entirely in memes?

@Greg (you see what i did there dot gif)

Contemplating meal planning because all the humans in this house are tired after work but also we don't want to eat entirely takeout trash.

I just googled "what food humans cook and eat"

I've gotten really pretty efficient at whipping up a kind of mexican-inspired dinner with rice, roasted onions & bell peppers, and stewed shredded chicken.

I use a rice cooker, a toaster oven, and an instant pot. It's all pretty much like video game cooking where I just dump ingredients into things and wait for timers to complete. But, we don't want to eat this every night.

One weekend, I made 30 little burritos and froze them all. Reheat in the toaster oven and it's like not-terrible taco bell. We survived on those for like 2 weeks

re: recommended instances?

@jomc I feel like the answer to this question is to use something like this tool, pick one that sounds vaguely acceptable to start.

Then, move to a different one if/when you've found yourself interacting pleasantly with folks elsewhere. It's not seamless to move, but it's also not that hard to export a CSV of folks you follow and import that on a new instance.

re: birdsite and crossposter discourse

@zkat Occasionally, I'll copypasta a thing between the two, mainly to see where it gets more interest. But I always feel a little squicky about it

re: recommended instances?

@jomc Also, as a disclaimer, I picked that particular tool at random from a google search. I have little idea how up to date it is, and I think there are others like it. But in any case, I think it's a healthy approach to just pick somewhere and plan to move. Otherwise it's decision paralysis all the way down

self-promotion

i am officially promoting myself to Senior editor-at-large of lmorchard.com

edit: due to performance concerns, I am demoting myself to just editor-at-large and will be discussing an improvement plan with myself soon

re: self-promotion

@teoli2003 I dunno, we have pretty tough standards here at this place I made up for myself

@aparrish This is a beautiful crime against nature

@aparrish Also "I kinda like being old." - I felt that and now I want to carve out time learning all that stuff too :blobwhee:

Again feeling a need to either renew my efforts to become a regular at a makerspace or just go into extreme debt building my own. Twin COVID-19 and social anxieties conspire to push me toward day dreaming about the latter

Like, I miss having access to a laser cutter big enough to nap in and I've never yet actually played with a 3D printer

(kinda feel like it's shameful to admit I've never 3D printed a widget, like I should turn in my nerd card at this point)

@thegibson :oof: I just realized I used to live near a Microcenter and now I do not

@martyn In theory, I have great respect for community-run spaces and committees. In practice, I don't personally have the temperament for it

re: Selfie, eye contact

@aendra This makes me want to get back to looking for a comfy onesie for a tall big dude who is me

re: Selfie, eye contact

@aendra Oof yeah, the uh snugness is what made me abandon my last onesie purchase heh

I should plot a chart comparing my fedi posting rate versus how many unit & integration tests I'm waiting to pass

@danhon Now, just don't be like me and accidentally delete the database πŸ˜…

@Retrograde Oh dang, I have come so close, so many years to acquiring one of these for an absurd price. At this point I almost feel like I should just build my own luggable-in-spirit from parts

@musing_sys @jerry @johnoauth Haha this is like satisfying the urge to run a BBS by buying CompuServe

I made a dent in a graph today, but my cat doesn't really care. Really makes you think. (I messed this toot up too many times for a joke)

Okay, well, Catsby did give me some headpats so I guess that's alright.

@nomad :oof: I get to a minor version of that almost every night and then yeah especially so on vacation

re: A proposal for brands on Mastodon /s 😭

@danhon This is not not a thing we would have proposed when many moons ago I worked under the WPP umbrella of agencies

@whalecoiner as someone who once worked adjacent to browser-making, I am in awe / fear

Les Orchard

@danhon I think that means you got a whole lot of federation going on

@nasamuffin Well... we did happen to buy two basement chest freezers near the start of the panini. πŸ€”
