This is a neat episode of Tech Won't Save Us with Kevin Driscoll, "How the Modem World Shaped the Internet"

I forget sometimes that folks on social media today might not have ever experienced the sort of fragmented & segmented world of digital social spaces separated by semi-permeable membranes of distance and phone company logistics

We didn't have expectations of all-against-all, everyone in one global bucket back then. Fediverse stuff feels more like that, or at least has a similar texture.

@zoomar @robonecon Been starting to take peanuts with me on walks to toss to crows. I'm starting to get some company following me around

Having sudden DNS problems on my hobby Ubuntu server, tempted to nuke it from orbit and start over. Sunday funday amirite?

Specifically, Docker seemed to be happily working and pulling images a few days ago, then today it's never heard of a registry-1.docker.io

Oh but also a node.js program can't make http requests it was making just fine a few days ago, also seems like dns

One of those things where I have at various points known what I was doing, fixed the thing, then swapped all the memories out for cat facts

Oh hey, I got my crap working again. I'm not entirely sure how. I flailed at config files and docker image tags until things started up.

Coincidentally, I was also watching Doctor Who with a lot of scenes of bashing away at Tardis wiring and it felt much the same.
