A Mastodon meta joke that's probably only funny in my head

Was listening to some podcast talking about this new Mastodon thing, and I thought "Any NPR listener who can't understand federation is a deadbeat who never donated to their local member station for the tote bag"

Also, against my better judgement, I tried tweeting a few times today. Every time, I got an error and the attempt failed. That site is really looking out for me.

@thestephaniebee@newsie.social :blobwave: welcome!

@jgarber Oh hey 👋 Ficlets... dang that takes me back :blobhappy:

@jgarber Heh, yeah, I think I'm many grey hairs and two cross-country moves since then. Nice to see ya round here!

I guess if we ever wanted a(nother) revival of ficly, the character limits on the fediverse go pretty high :)

re: A Mastodon meta joke that's probably only funny in my head

@md No, you're getting the bag

@jgarber Webmentions is one of those things I keep meaning to get around to playing with, but I have started blogging a bit more lately so I could actually use it

@jgarber I even had a run for awhile this summer with some little creative writing experiments that could have been ficlets with webmentions 🤔 blog.lmorchard.com/tag/fiction

@Lrrr Looks like the front fell off

@Lrrr (that's not suppose to happen)

@danhon the groan I made just now came from my bones

Did some more tinkering with my fediverse webring thing. Added some RSS feed links and an OPML export.

Also added URL options to support previous, random, and next options for verified webring links directly to my Mastodon profile.

fediverse-webring-demo.glitch.

Now, I kinda want to invite folks to join a "real" webring, but I can't think of a fun theme yet. Pretty easy to remix on Glitch now, though.

Huh. Didn't think I'd be into Andor at all, since I'm kind of done with all things Star Wars. But if all Star Wars was like Andor... dang.

Like, I don't ever want to see another Skywalker. But give me a lived-in galaxy with a mix of grunge and sensawunda, and I might be back on board. Lots of stories to tell without inbred space wizard families.

@aendra @hemminger Every time I see an op-ed, I'm like couldn't you have just put this on a blog or something?

Hmm, tried doing the search-to-follow thing on my personal instance. It came up with nothing for the person I tried to follow.

Tried again with three other instances where I have accounts. Two found the person, one didn't.

I'll probably dig into Mastodon code further to see how search works - but does it only search the local database and only know about people whose toots have flowed through already? If so, that seems... suboptimal for finding people to follow on a new instance.

I could imagine defederation & blocking have a say in this too, but my personal instance is currently naively open to whatever rolls in. Also wondering if it's a misconfiguration on my instance, but that would be good to learn about too

Listening to the Big Sonic Heaven radio stream and "Iona" by Night Hikes came on.

First heard that song back in like summer 2020 during a peak of pandemic isolation angst. I just kind of bliss out to the guitars right from the first few opening chords, every time I hear it now.

@soypunk It's an artisanal hand-crafted static site generator that's always half-broken! 😁

@quinn Now I want to re-read all the Laundry Files novels by Charles Stross

@tomh I've still got it installed and ready to go, just as soon as the FriendFeed servers come back up

@tomh dedicated neglect, to be clear

@leopardboy Oh I guess I'm being inadvertently cagey about the account to not single anyone out... This is who I'm failing to look up on my own server (because pico8 is neato):

Ohhhhh you know what I bet my instance's problem is?

Gotdang DNS.

Sure enough. It was DNS.

:headdesk::headdesk::headdesk::headdesk::headdesk:

@leopardboy Yup, that was exactly it! :headdesk:

@soypunk Well, ill-advisedly as an experiment, my instance is currently running on a spare PC in my basement with a pair of remote ports forwarded for HTTP & WSS out to a tiny $20/yr VM with a bunch of network allowance. The PC has 32GB ram and a few TB of space.

@Anneheathen Why not all three?

@leopardboy Yeah, I run some cursed combo of Pi-Hole and DNS-over-HTTPS to get around my ISP's own cursed DNS. It seems not to get along with Docker containers sometimes, most likely because I don't know what I'm doing

@GoblinHellion Oh that's a cool color! Makes me want to go back to purple meself

@leopardboy No one expects the Spanish Inquisition^W^W er I mean DNS
