@marcoshuerta I mean, he expressed a preference because most apps spy. Wasn't an assertion about particular Mastodon apps. These screenshots are kind of exceptions that prove the rule 🤔

@dangillmor@mastodon.social You might have already seen it, but if not: The Elk web-based client is pretty great elk.zone/home

@marcoshuerta Yeah, most apps in general. Like I said, these apps are exceptions to prove the rule. That you even had to look up "privacy scorecards" for them is the problem. Thus, a preference not to use apps is not unreasonable, IMO.

@marcoshuerta To put it another way: Some mushrooms are delicious. Many are poisonous.

Producing a list of non-poisonous mushrooms doesn't change my general preference to leave mushrooms alone in the wild. Seems like a sensible preference to me.

@timbray @mconnor @ben

There's an implicit model around here of shared hosting: An instance where some-but-not-all folks pitch in with money &/or time, some-but-not-all of the time. Not everyone is a customer/subscriber.

I'd like to see more support for sysops and co-sysops as a middle tier of folks running these things. Not every instance needs to scale, but many instances overall can help scale the aggregate system

@timbray @mconnor @ben

Like, we talk an awful lot about "users" in the tech industry. But this seems like a space to consider "hosts" and "organizers" as folks with whom to partner and empower. Maybe even consider selling services like moderation assistance alongside servers.

Sometimes it seems gross to me that there's a .google TLD

@mmayo Yeah, I'm very fuzzy on the history :/ there's a wikipedia page that's light on details en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.google

@sindarina Eh, I think those are all gross too

I dunno, it's an arbitrary system 🤷‍♂️

@craigmaloney Wow, that's wild! I must have seen that video before, but forgot all about it. Sure looks like the 80s/90s :D

I do not actually need a TUNIC fox plush. I don't. Not really. Seriously.

(but look at that lil shield and sword though)

Also a continuing weird thing with my iPhone: It turns itself on exactly 3 seconds after being picked up from a wireless charger.

Not immediately, but 3 seconds. Just long enough to already be in my pocket. Lock screen prevents most weirdness, but not all. Raise to wake is off.

My old Android phone would turn on immediately after being picked up off the charger, so I had a habit of hitting the power button on pickup. With the iPhone, though, 3 seconds. If I remember, I turn it on and off just to be sure.

Been playing some Legend of the Red Dragon lately since I setup my BBS and DOOR games.

Played that thing for years, back in the day, and I never knew about this easter egg around Jennie Garth. Basically cheat codes expressing adoration for her that shower bonuses on your character.

Also, some folks totally rewrote LORD in javascript, including a re-implementation of all the JEANNIE cheat codes

gitlab.synchro.net/main/sbbs/-

The JS rewrite of LORD is a very nice thing to have around. It looks like the last version of LORD in DOS changed the implementation of registration codes.

So, previously purchased codes no longer work and keygens fail as well. And I haven't seen anyone share a cracked version of the .EXE.

I'd gladly pay the $15 for the ancient game, but the folks managing purchases of new registration codes seem to have disappeared.

@cinja I always kind of bounced hard off TradeWars, though I kept trying to get into it. Trying again now, actually, since I got the TW2002 game server running again 😅

@cinja Yeah, I need to look into playing with one of those... There's this thing called SWATH that can automate stuff, though it's $26 shareware with a 30-day trial. Not sure if it's can still be purchased or whether I feel $26 worth of fun to be had from TW2002 swath.net/

@goinROGUEin10 @marcoshuerta 🤷‍♂️ True, but I already have a lot of hobbies

I just saw something dated 2014 and thought "well, that wasn't too long ago" and then I remembered how math works

@simon Can you even imagine some enormous being just inexplicably reaching down and building a luxury resort for you?

@brion If you don't agree to the TOS on the transporter pad, they'll just keep generating transporter clone variants of you until one pops up who does agree
