Also, I am frankly astonished that my cruddy little re-post of a video from a different social network somehow appears to have gotten more ~engagement~ in 3 hours than a tweet from the original source?
Like, this is not a brag. I am baffled. Maybe I accidentally made click-bait? Better be mindful not to do that again
also i have a soundcloud but it's full of old amiga mods
@MichaelKlamerus Oh that's a screenshot from Twitter https://twitter.com/verge/status/1646588861529706497
@MichaelKlamerus Heh, yeah, that would make more sense, but alas!
Social media strategy but for minimally sustainable engagement
@nerdlinger IMO, this isn't about "allowed" or "suppressed" speech. This is about "amplified" and "assisted" speech.
This is about building a platform or a venue like a conference center and then squirming when asked if racists can rent the place out for their meetups.
Given a straight answer, many folks might choose to take their business elsewhere.
Personally, what I think is good about the fediverse is that individual venue owners can decide when not to hand out megaphones. Declining to supply megaphones is not suppression.
@sungo Is this like "the aristocrats"?
@jbaggs Haha, well if that's interesting to you, here are my cruddy amiga mods ๐ https://soundcloud.com/lmorchard/sets/old-amiga-mods
@runes (insert orson welles clapping gif here)
@sz3 They're kinda bad! https://soundcloud.com/lmorchard/sets/old-amiga-mods
So, I signed up for an account on pixelfed.social, but not sure what I'll do with it.
I guess I post photos here on the regular? And following myself over there reveals a really nice UI for browsing them?
But, I'm not a photographer per se and never got into an Instagram habit. So I'm not sure I'm the ideal user for a photo-centric service?
pixelfed does have a really nice threaded comment UI and a nice UI in general, though
@drwho Personally, I want to build more stuff over here and probably also stop following folks on substack
@ckape @malwaretech :oof:โ
The ability to read alt/description text on an image is coming next.
FWIW, I'd also really like to be able to see the image while I'm writing alt-text. That's been kind of a showstopper for me using ivory
@rhelmer Oh, I'm thinking pretty simple: No auto-discovery. The UI would have a text field asking for your preferred instance domain. After that, it'd be stored in a cookie or localstorage.
Granted, each new site would ask you the same question, but eventually your usual haunts would remember.
Not super fool-proof, but I'd think it would be better than "copy this URL and paste it over on your instance"
@rhelmer Yeah, besides asking the user to enter an instance domain, I'd think the next better thing would be an extension that learns your preferred home instance and then permits 3rd party sites to query it via postMessage with your permission
@rhelmer Could even be a progressive combo of the two: If the extension is present, ask the extension for the domain. If no answer from an extension, fall back to asking the user to type in their home instance domain.
@TootUncommon@mstdn.party I would say that someone handing out megaphones should consider who they consider is a dipshit and not hand them a megaphone.
Might be different for every megaphone distributor, but they should at least be prepared to admit to whom they distribute megaphones.
@TootUncommon@mstdn.party I'm not saying the goal is to host only materials which nobody could find offensive. I'm saying take responsibility for what you enable and amplify.
@mconnor Yeah, when I grow up, I kinda want a job working on this stuff
@breadbin Yeah I think that's my dilemma. In the past, I might have used different services for different media and then pull it all together on my blog. But, microblogging ate my macroblog
@thegibson :oof: hope you feel much better real soon!
@yuki2501 :blobwhee:โ
@whalecoiner I think I only ever did that once, for one single conference trip, and never again
@robkerr This is where I think a trackball is superior when dealing with cats
@maddiefuzz @kusuriya I think the only reason I never got into 100s of tabs is I was an early adopter of social bookmarking sites. And once upon a time, I had an extension that would save / reopen all tabs with a hashtag
@maddiefuzz @kusuriya (at least that's my best guess, because otherwise I'm surprised my ADHD butt manages to keep my tab count < 20)
@TheShellyTea :blobyes:โ every time, I don't know why either
@maddiefuzz @kusuriya I know at one point, Firefox implemented a feature on mobile where tabs not seen for 2 weeks would get automatically closed or shuffled into a "dormant" tab scenario. I can't remember which, but the mere notion panicked me into turning it off
@annika ๐ I was like, yeah, that's a good idea, folks should do that. And then I remembered I keep using :birdsite:โ and then I facepalmed ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
@signal9 @SocialGaff It's as if someone wants to put your tender heart in a blender
@thestrangelet Oh, there's new VNV Nation? :blobcheer:โ
