@alex @22 @clew I haven't played with it in a long while, but I do wonder sometimes why netnews isn't more of a thing as a modern federated tech
Can we send these bros to Mars already?

Look at these billionaires coming to fisticuffs like animals, when what they really should be doing is firing themselves bodily from highly advanced cannons at the sun in fierce competition to see who can deliver the light of human consciousness to the chromosphere first
Who asked for random autoplay news videos from a weather app? Iβd like to buy them a spoiled moldy coconut water
@thomasfuchs you donβt want to cross me, i can be mildly unpleasant
@gameboycamera I think my only disappointment is that none of them will get punched enough
Was listening to the Vergecast wherein a discussion of "eternal september" was had, with respect to the whole Meta, P92, fediverse thing.
Someone said "well usenet's still there" and I was like er, well, not really. I guess it's debatable how much of a fatal blow it was to dump novel new masses of people into an existing community, but I tend to think it was pretty harmful to that system overall.
And I'm finding it ludicrously ironic that some of the same folks who are saying "if you're going to use an open protocol, be an open community" are the folks who really dig the vibe on Bluesky, a currently invite-only curated community.
Like, look, any interesting assemblage of people has some level of intentful structure and culture. A company can suffer if it hires so fast that new hires kind of wipe out the successful culture that brought it this far. A community can suffer if new randos flood in so fast that they wipe out the culture that brought folks together.
Sometimes I think of it like cocktails or drinks or any chemical mix, really. Take a fountain Coke. It's the Coke you want, at a certain concentration of syrup vs soda water. Now, just open the spigot on the soda water and let it rip - the Coke goes away. It's really not that hard to understand
And yeah, I know it's hugely reductive to compare human beings to syrup and soda water. Also not saying either syrup or soda water is bad.
Just saying, when there are mixes of culture and ideas, different combinations & concentrations result in different communities with different implications for the folks involved in terms of safety, comfort, and belonging.
Some of those formulas turn out distasteful and injurious for a lot of folks, so I can see why there might be a smidgen of resistance in particular toward big moves from historically bad actors
I totally forgot Uwe Boll and Lowtax getting into a boxing ring π

HAVE AT YOU
Holy crap, I really wish I could pump my own gas in Oregon.
Never thought I'd miss the generally hassle free experience of over 25 years of pulling into a Michigan gas station, swiping a card, filling a tank, and driving away without interacting with a human.
Like, I dunno, maybe I've been blue pilled by Big Gasoline to the dangers of interacting with my vehicle's liquid fueling system π€·ββοΈ
Though, to be fair, we're more likely to just switch to an entirely electric vehicle for our next car - if we get one at all - so that problem could solve itself
Like, we went 3.5 years without a car, and it was pretty nice. Ended up getting one because one of us gained a commute, but then we lost a commute, and now it seems semi-optional again to have a car
@wohali holy crap this is amazing
(though also, to be honest, a grocery run with an e-bike in the pouring rain really does make a car look nice)
Mainly I say all these things because they are mighty strange thoughts for a Motor City boy to be having
@toolbear Yeah, that is a thing that has turned out nicely here in PDX. Walkable to every essential I've needed so far and very friendly to a Tern cargo e-bike (although some hills have all but defeated me).
@allenstenhaus This is fabulous! :blobcheerbounce:β
@ArtifexUmbra Nice! I've got one of those on my "to fix" list - I think it suffered from this design flaw where the GPU needs a solder reflow because a few joints under the chip have cracked
@ArtifexUmbra I think that was one of the last Mac laptops where I was able to replace the keyboard! broke a key and they sold me a new one that slotted in very easily
@sdwilsh Yeah, I could definitely use some better rain gear and work on the accompanying motivation :)
