I'm definitely in Camp Small Communities. I think the biggest mistake of the last decade of social media was all-against-all - which some folks call "open" but IMO is really just community neglect and externalization of risk in order to extract value from attention. Not every body on the earth needs access to every other body.
And when I think "all-against-all", I think of the song "Bloodsport" by SKOLD vs KMFDM, which is not really a way to run anything other than a spectacle. Certainly not a social gathering space.
That said... these do sound like rad potential instance domains:

@controlfreak FWIW, I have a flomask! I have a short beard and it was a very good seal for me. Came with normal and "pro" filters, and the pro filters seemed pretty robust. Got me through a week of jury duty most recently.

Oh boy, was in the middle of a fairly important zoom chat when my CalDigit thunderbolt dock just decided to glitch out in a way it's never done before. All peripherals dead, my outgoing audio just nonstop screeching until I managed to yank all connectors out of my laptop.
I love computers so so much
