@charliejane weirdly, i was just catching up on the Dawn of X comics, so i think i jinxed this whole thing into happening

A saving grace here is that we can drop off at libraries, so it’s not all usps

@rckenned I was so mad that I missed Beck! Stuck home with a leg injury

@tankgrrl We watched that over the weekend and were like, wait, do both Mario & Luigi end up rescued by Peach in this? Because they were both so useless

that mastodon csam story in wapo

So I read that WaPo story on mastodon being "rife" with child porn. Then I read the Stanford paper. My take: Ignore the story, but do read the paper.

On one hand, roughly 0.03% of 325000 public posts found to be child porn over 2 days doesn't sound "rife". And, to be fair, the paper does not describe the situation as such.

On the other hand, that's still too much. Like an industrially-acceptable proportion of rat turds in my morning oatmeal.

The paper also has some good discussion on how the fediverse could sorely use some cross-instance shared moderation and automated detection systems - and how, in particular, federation makes it easy to overwhelm existing detection systems.

We need better defense systems that don't rely on individual admins doing their overworked best

re: that mastodon csam story in wapo

@george Yeah, I think tl;dr the paper essentially agrees with those points

re: that mastodon csam story in wapo

@scott I guess my point is that we could easily use that information to avoid the problem. It's just a few bad apples (spoiling the bunch)

Assuming most instances are free of Nazis and creeps - what keeps them free of such? Will de-federation continue to scale? Can we do better with shared automation & detection that doesn't rely on the efforts (and mental health) of individual admins?

Can we make it more clear what the structure of the federation looks like, such that folks can make informed decisions about where to spend time while avoiding creeps & Nazis?

@benbrown As a homebrewer, I had fun capping bottles for the first batch or two. After that, I'm like this stuff's getting kegged and we're using growlers from now on

@benbrown Might be a fun episode for a post-apocalyptic show where Our Heroes raid a bunch of old homebrew stores and breweries and somebody enthusiastically hauls boxes of The Last Metal Caps home πŸ˜‚

@virtualbri I am repeatedly dismayed at just how much folks underrate this movie

@mathowie I feel like there's a viral "long tail of instagram niche interests" blog post somewhere in this for someone
