@thegibson Since the cool kids are necro'ing the thread: This one time? When I still worked on CD-ROM multimedia projects? Back when they took 45 minutes to burn a single CD-R?

We had a client handing out CD-ROMs to a big audience. Hard deadline for the master CD: they had to be physically mass produced for the show. Read-only media with no option to patch later.

As the main Macromedia Director wrangler, I pulled a couple all-nighters to get the thing wrapped up. Many 45-60 minute cycles of writing CD-Rs with the office's sole CD burner. Many runs through manual QA testing to find just one more thing wrong.

At dawn, we decided the "final" master was good enough. Hours to spare before the deadline.

Great: I went home, took the phone off the hook, put in ear plugs. Dead to the world.

While I slept, someone gave the CD one more go.

The issue they filed was entitled "Did this thing just prompt me to go fuck my mother?"

Luckily, one of my roommates also worked there and hadn't left yet. He drove home, woke my ass up, dragged me back to the office.

I knew exactly what the problem was - it was me, I was the problem: I removed the offending dialog message, along with a dozen more they hadn't discovered. I'd put them all in code paths that "shouldn't" have ever been reached.

The final, final CD master was ready about 70 minutes before the deadline. Just enough time to wait 45 minutes burning one more CD-R to physically hand off to a courier sprinting to the duplication vendor.

Somehow, I wasn't fired. I still have a copy of the motherfucking master around here somewhere.

Moral of the story, I guess: Be very, very careful about your debugging techniques when you get slappy at 4:30am after 37 hours between sleeps. All code is reachable by a determined QA professional.
