IMO, one of the worst things about the growth of LLM and ChatGPT usage is the apparent population of folks who think they're the only ones who've ever heard of it.

So, they think they're uniquely clever to generate smart-sounding garbage and attempt to submit that as their "contribution" to various projects. Like it's a magic trick that no one will catch and somehow they'll be the only smart people in the world.

It's so fuckin tiring.

@mathowie random online hot girl interested in me for no discernible reason? the gods smile upon me! nothing can go wrong!

(I realize this is not a unique genius hot take of my own, either. It's just that it keeps happening & happening)

But I guess, like, what's the psychology here? Is it a Cargo Cult thing?

i.e. the LLM generates a sequence of words just as confusing & impressive sounding as other contributions to the project - so these folks think they've found a shortcut to perform the appropriate handwavings & mumblenoises to attract good fortune and positive outcomes?

Mind you, I'm not really talking about folks who might use LLM output as a start to filling a blank page that they further refine and work through.

No, I mean folks who seem to just spew crap into the LLM textarea, hit "generate", and then copypasta that output straight into another textarea with little or no intervention in between. Because it seems to happen a lot

Today I heard the phrase "a pick-me for capitalism" for the first time - part of my brain started wheezing laughing while a whole other chunk just descended into the void

@Eamon1916 This is clearly a dazzle-pattern made by humans to disrupt skynet / daleks from getting up the stairs.

This is also clearly a dazzle-pattern made by skynet / daleks to cause humans to fall down the stairs.

Simple.

Weird AI future: What if every YouTube tutorial video was paired with a generative model that enables a convincing facsimile of live on-demand Q&A between the host & viewer after the end of the video?

@republic2809 Realistically, I think the on-demand Q&A would quickly become self-parodying once it starts proposing marriage

Would an even weirder AI be a model trained on the complete recordings of Weird Al? What polka medley would it produce?

Since Weird Al is respectful and careful to ask artists before he produces a parody, I'd have to ask him before I produced a parody-producing model from his parodies. I wonder if he'd be cool with that?

re: Death

@Macross I met that dude so many times but only talked to him maybe half-a-dozen. Will definitely remember him, though. My condolences. 💔 👁️
