For the past week or two, while the teachers' strike protests have been ongoing, there's a guy who's been parking in the same spot beneath my office window.

Every morning, he unloads a tambourine, a snare drum, and a megaphone. He gives each of them a little test before shouldering a backpack and walking off toward the protest in progress.

So, a few months ago, I was belaboring over whether to use Wasabi or Backblaze as a remote backup service from my Synology NAS. Both seem well supported out of the box.

Ended up going with Backblaze B2, since I couldn't seem to get good pricing info out of Wasabi without scheduling a sales call.

Backblaze, at least, seemed straightforward: I figured they would charge me around $6-10 per month for just the essentials backed up from my NAS.

Turns out I didn't account for the free service thresholds: so far they've only charged me $2 per month for my tentative hunk of backup less than 1TB.

This pleases me greatly.

Oh, and I even screwed up a bit: I have some janky file syncing of PDFs from my e-ink tablet that kept bumping file modification dates on everything - so the same 200MB of documents kept getting re-uploaded every 5 minutes 😓 But, even with that goof-up in usage, I didn't hit my spending cap of an entire US$0.25 for transfer API calls

across the hall, my wife just started blaring The Venture Bros soundtrack and I'm bopping to it

@tedivm Oh, :oof: I haven't seen that yet, but it's early days yet 😓

@mhoye Finally my code will look as it feels: like it's holding me hostage for ransom

The End of Retirement

Apropos, as my wife & I have been doing some retirement planning. The planning formulae have us retiring somewhere around age 75 or 80. Kind of surprised the result isn't "haha sucker" or NaN

@rafial this may be how I already converse with voice assistants 😅

Ordered a Prusa MK4 3D printer kit a few weeks ago as a birthday present to myself. Haven't heard an update since. They said up front that there's a lead time of 2-3 weeks. So, they're not technically late, but I want it now :blobangry:

The Future has very clearly spoiled me, a child who grew up with "please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery" as the disclaimer for every single thing

The other day, I ordered a knee pillow and a USB hub and I swear they both showed up 1ms after I clicked the button

selfie; ec; flippin the bird; obs

Wherein I am playing with the new OBS release and I have too many cameras pointed at the same thing - i.e. me

(Normally this would be at my workbench, with only one camera pointed at me and ideally the others pointed at more interesting views)

@jrconlin @rckenned Funny thing is my idea of retirement would be having the money & time to build fun stuff whether or not it'd make a living. So, I'd still be working just not, like, working

re: selfie; ec; flippin the bird; obs

also, I am flipping myself off in this picture, not you

@billseitz I'm sad because my alma mater tore down my old dorm. I could almost see that being a plan heh

mh +/-; drugs; funny?; cat

The vet put Catsby on Prozac. Which, you know, makes a lot of sense for this incredibly anxious lil guy.

But I'm gonna be jealous if he's less anxious than me because I keep putting off finding a therapist

@aphyr everybody's so creative
