@ifixcoinops I went down a hill last year and was like "HAHAHA" and looked down. It said 30mph. And then I was like "OH NOOOO I'M GOING SOO FAST!!!"

Assembled the printer enclosure, last night. I think it fits into the basement clutter aesthetic just fine

Any friendos played much with OpenSCAD or CadQuery?

Look like interesting ways to compose 3D models for printing using code & scripting, rather than dragging things around in a GUI. That feels like it could be slightly comfier for my brain to design parts for printing.

Or, at least, as a way to rough things out initially before importing into something else for hand tweaks?

Part of my brain is like - this is a Logo system, I know this! (this, despite having forgotten most of what I knew about Logo from age 10)

@george Yeah, I'm thinking things like... I need a project case with a lid, yea wide / long / deep, with mounting holes in these places for such and such machine screws. Oh and some curves & chamfers would be nice. And then later, change all the yea variables (I guess the real term for this is "parameterized" 😅 )

Also, gcode for the printer smells a bit like Logo to me, so I'll probably get into trouble someday making spaghetti by handwriting some gcode for the heck of it

Why be afraid of future unaligned fast-AI when we have current-day unaligned slow-AI corporations like Uber figuring out it can charge you more when your phone battery is low?

Faster AI made of computers rather than slow AI made of processes and people will just assert the same cybercrud more quickly & deftly

@zrail Ah, I knew stuff like this had to exist but I didn't have good search terms :)

@george Oh, nice! I wonder if anyone is working on a UI specifically for this back & forth with an LLM? (someone must be)

@george Hahah yes

us politics

"If attitudes don’t shift, a political dating mismatch will threaten marriage"

A cultural shift might be necessary — one that views politics as a part of people’s identity but far from the most important part. Americans’ ability to live together, quite literally, might depend on it.

Weird how having disparate ideas about how to live alongside your neighbors has a negative effect on finding someone to live even closer with you. 🤔

Oh but we can't have MARRIAGE ITSELF threatened, so SOMEONE will just have to budge on this whole thing.

Hahah, what a dipshit take from this esteemed editorial board.

re: us politics

It's reminiscent of the way women's hemlines are blamed for male violence or the way mothers are blamed for what their grown sons choose to do. It feels easier to blame women than to hold men accountable. But it's a distraction from the real source of the problem, and from thinking about real solutions.

This is a better take, IMO. And maybe all these social darwinism obsessed incels should consider that their difficulty in finding mates is a signal from the overall system, indicating that their respective fitness levels are clearly lacking? Maybe the selfish genes are selecting for more advantageous outcomes?

@djsundog entirely bullshit

@quinnanya That looks like a really neat mix of readings and practical tinkering covering a lot of ground. I feel like I'm kind of trying to speed-run a very similar syllabus at work 😅
