Folks complaining about Mastodon instances blocking federation with Threads have real "never met my neighbor five doors down but crashed their cookout and got salty when they kicked me out" energy and it baffles me
@aendra I've got a pretty shallow understanding of the at-protocol, but it keeps seeming kind of frustrating to me.
Like, the "magic" of Bluesky seems to be the people they managed to gather, not so much the tech. So then, why not just have an invite-only Mastodon server if the user-facing features are roughly equal?
Otherwise, it's going to seem like a rugpull if Bluesky eventually succeeds at the tech goals for their flavor of federation and the whole community inevitably changes
