Spent the last two weeks doing almost no computery things. Lots of hours out in my shop. Didn't really make anything. Installed an attic ladder to access the loft more easily, moved nearly all the contents of the building to different places. Left me with lots of physical aches & pains and little mental awareness of what's going on in the world. It's been great.
Getting back to work and it's like an MMO where I don't remember what all the buttons do.
Trying not to aggro all the mobs as I authenticate into Slack through 5 layers of single-sign-on
@socketwench Heh, stalling out 3/4 of the way through assembling my RC2014 because I got really frustrated with my messy shop is part of why I spent most of the holidays hyperfocused on reworking everything 😅

Got a new lil Keychron K12 40% bluetooth mech keyboard. Key switches and build seems nice. The fn-layer arrow keys are in an abysmal position. Wondering what will happen first: a) my muscle memory adapts to the layout or b) I find an alternative firmware to remap the thing?
Seems like I found some QMK-based firmware for the thing - but at the expense of not supporting the bluetooth radio. Which, like, you know, is suboptimal for a bluetooth keyboard

@thomasfuchs Yeah, I've been pretty locked into a preference for tiny 60% keyboards since my first Happy Hacking Keyboard. Probably back to the C64, really.

Wow, Dell fucked up their new XPS laptops in nearly the exact way Apple fucked up their laptops back years ago when I switched to favoring Dell. Touch bar (but worse), abysmal keyboard. Ugh.
Maybe in a few years, they'll backtrack and follow Apple in unfucking things? Sad, because I've really enjoyed how repairable Dell stuff has been in my experience, versus Apple's wads of glue.

But, like, seriously, who told Dell "hey, you know that top row of the keyboard? just make it a smooth strip of glowy touch pads like a shitty mid-2000s microwave oven"? It's like the Touch Bar but somehow with even less reason to exist.
Oh, and these things have a "borderless" trackpad? Like, I guess you vaguely swipe at the lower 1/3 of the laptop and eventually learn where it starts & ends? This feels like a similar UX design fuck-you to the hockey-puck circular mice that Apple made back in the 90s
Our old oven - the one before the one we have now with the annoying OTA software updates - had a control panel with glowy touch buttons like this Dell laptop.
They wouldn't light up until you touched one, but you didn't know which one you wanted to touch until they lit up. So we were constantly touching a random thing, cancelling that, and then touching the thing we actually wanted.
You'd think we'd get some muscle memory on that pad or maybe be able to squint to see the right button, but no.

@siege I remember a few years when those services were a nice price, then they slowly frog-boiled up until they cost double or more. Yikes.
