Whoooo, the Big PIpes are up to 67% capacity. It's storming and the graph is up and to the right. Probably will be fine though

I have no idea why this is suddenly interesting to me, but number go up

@sil Dang, I just got a daemon-based Discord bot working over the last few weeks. Now I have to look into this "serverless" approach

@Alairthephoenix Heh, so we have a combined sewer system here in Portland that mixes household drains with storm drains and pipes it all through to the treatment plant.

Used to be, when that system was overloaded, it would just kind of bloop floods of untreated raw sewage into the Willamette river that runs through town. The Big Pipes were built to add buffer capacity that now prevents overflow most of the time.

Still, sometimes, we still flush our toilets right into the river.

(Detroit has a combined sewer system too, but no Big Pipes. The Rouge River, Detroit River, and Lake Erie get the overflow.)

@JessTheUnstill I still can't believe it. At the time I was cheering and wishing for a monthly subscription to updated boosters for anything & everything. I'd happy shoot myself up on the regular to keep my anti-virus definitions up to date

Ahh, whew, the Big Pipes are back down to 11% capacity. Also I can't leave my house because everything is ice.

Deep on my "maybe someday" projects list is to build a "Fediverse Oracle" like the old Usenet Oracle. You ask it a question and, in exchange, it privately asks you to answer someone else's question.

The schtick would be pretending it's an LLM, but it's temporarily broken, so we need your help to answer these questions.

I can't decide how big a disaster this thing would be if I actually built it 🤔

All fun & games, but also I'd want to work in some signal to indicate that someone was an asshole or unfunny troll in playing oracle and either block or shadowban them from further play. Or, at least keep folks apart who don't enjoy their combined interactions. Not entirely sure how to keep it fun and not become an anonymized cesspool

@george Yeah, was starting to think along those lines. Not a mastodon bot but a lower-level ActivityPub bot leaning into handling moderation

Huh, been awhile since I checked in on Cloudflare's serverless ActivityPub thing Wildebeest. Seemed interesting, but looks like it's archived / sunset now. I wonder what the story is there?

github.com/cloudflare/wildebee

Like, I know Wildebeest was kind of a promotional demo of Cloudflare services. But, a serverless architecture for activitypub stuff seems really handy

@csaetre @george I'm also fuzzily imagining something where folks who don't jibe with each other just get less exposed to each other. Like, if you get an answer you dislike and can give that feedback to the bot, it'll change a weight somewhere which makes it less likely you'll be paired with that person again.

@socketwench I, too, have one of these on my to-print list, also for that shape of PCB 😁

Lots of projects I want to get to, out in my workshop. But, alas, there's a land of ice & snow between me and that shop. The ice-breaking tools are in the shop, and I'm not sure I could actually get the door open right now. 🤔

@Alairthephoenix Yeah, it's weird, sometimes I feel like a city infrastructure dork 😅

@george Heh, yeah, that's where a bunch of my last few projects sort of stalled out. Tried stuff in Python, Go, and Rust and lost interest in each before I finished the ActivityPub stuff. I think there might be some decent modules in each of those ecosystems, but I keep being too masochistic to dig around for them

@bnys that's hawt, I want to print one in atomic purple

@jrconlin It's full of... something

You ever use a thing in tech and you're like "huh, that can't possibly be the way it's done" and then after a day of googling & reading you conclude "this is absolutely the way it's currently done and I hate it"?

(this is a rhetorical question. if you say "no" then I absolutely don't trust you)

Man I sure do love searching Discord for solutions for a software library problem

@nomad hmm, i'll paste that into discord and see if anyone has said anything about it
