Update: I went for a walk before sundown and fed about 25 crows along the way. I think they like & recognize me. I still hope to open trade relations sometime soon

@Taweret adobe air was the bomb
@rgegriff oh hey, I actually pay for a couple of those
@hotdogsladies Gonna have to use that as an escalation of my favorite 😅👍
On one hand, all this cross-dunking between bluesky and mastodon stans over a bridge is pathetic
On the other hand, bluesky works differently to mastodon in data concentrating ways that folks really should understand. They’re not basically the same thing
@adeese with my luck, they’ll give me someone else’s earbud
@polotek so, a particular thing about bluesky vs mastodon is that bluesky’s architecture is a pipeline into larger, increasingly centralized servers.
Their distribution is not the same shape as mastodon’s. It’s a choice that some folks dislike. Not everything in bluesky is as happily self-hostable like mastodon
But to be fair, there are some bits like feed generators which are easier in bluesky’s architecture
This ode to OPML rolled into my RSS reader, and here's a thing that I've never really seen take off:
Curated collections of RSS feeds in OPML reading lists - i.e. you subscribe to the OPML resource to stay synced with the curator's rotating set of RSS feeds. It's not just a one-time import, it's an ongoing meta-subscription.
Not my original idea, of course. It's an over 20-year-old idea from @davew
@adrianco Yeah, the crows seem to like raw unsalted peanuts in shell. I get them in bulk bags from a literal "Backyard Bird Store" in our neighborhood. But, yeah, crows can be kind of prone to shenanigans, so they might annoy other birds. Still, I think they're fun to encourage
A random fact the internet just taught me:
Your nipples are older than your teeth.
Idea while waiting for a meeting to start: an EDM club night that’s all just generic “upbeat music” from corporate training and webinars
@george What an iconic track!
@danhon this shall be played at closing time just before the lights come on
my cpap provider sent me a valentine card in email and i don't think i like it
LRT: "atproto is built on the assumption that anybody should be able to index the network"
I think that's a key thing to understand about Bluesky's flavor of decentralization. Mastodon and ActivityPub aren't shaped like that. Some folks agree the whole federated network should be indexable and discoverable - and some folks really, really don't.
Folks in the former camp may find a lot to like about Bluesky & atproto. From the latter camp, I think there will always be vociferous resistance.
It's kinda but not really like having an open-plan house versus a house with many little rooms. I think folks who favor one over the other are baffled by the opposite opinion.
But, like, really: If you want to explore search indexing in social media, Bluesky is probably the place where you're least likely to get beat about the virtual head & shoulders over a hobby project
@JoYo Yeah, that's where I'm like... let 'em have it. And maybe all these systems don't need to be harmonized & conjoined
@puckipedia This is a lovely hack, bravo :catClap:
@socketwench @maxeddy I was just scrambling to find this gif!
@lafp also, the tilting header on your website is neato!
@evan You don't get rich by spending money, man!
