@undead @c0debabe yeah, main reason I ever learned vi was because it was the only editor I found everywhere. And then one day I was like, well, okay, I GUESS I'll use it on my home computer too
Man, I almost forgot how much I love Mass Effect #gaming
Replaying Mass Effect 1 now, and itโs like rewatching a the first season of a solidly decent syfy original series I havenโt seen in a bunch of years
I keep wanting another good space opera RPG. I bounced right off Starfield. Kinda wish there was something like Baldurs Gate 3 in spaaaace
@xerz Yeah, I am sorry this was not just a meme :sadness:โ
@Likewise This strikes me as basically a threat
Felt some general nostalgia last night playing Mass Effect. Life back in 2008 seemed so much easier!
(reads journal entries from 2008)
Oh no, i was just as much an anxious mess in 2008 as I am now. And a bunch of practical things are objectively better for me despite overarching dread. That's oddly comforting?
@dark_stang I have seen a bunch of videos of folks who live months at a time in mountaintop fire watch cabins for a living and want to go to there
There is a part of me who wants to a) train a model to recognize my journal handwriting and convert it all to plain text and b) fine-tune an LLM and/or hook it up to a search index over my journal entries.
All this so that I can ask my old entries "hey how depressed were you in March 2011?" or whenever
@ingalls Thanks for hanging out with us around here and talking about the weather! Hope Vancouver is good to ya!
@billmerrill Ohhhh, I too forget this is possible :blobfacepalm:โ
@PetrichorSquirrel Like I'd guess they were going for "determined" but to me it reads "bad smell, politely ignoring"
@chuck @rauschma I keep eyeing up Bazzite, which is like the gaming-centric cousin to Bluefin as I understand it. I tried it last week but had bad luck, but that might just have been being too early to a new version
Have you ended up needing to customize things much with rpm-ostree? Or have files, config, containers, etc been enough for general tinkering?
Last game console I got was a Nintendo Switch, and before that was an Xbox 360. I used to get almost every console that came along, but swapped over to PC gaming in the past bunch of years.
I almost can't imagine now why I'd buy a console that's not something quirky like a Switch. Like, a PC's more expensive sorta - except my PC is a Ship of Theseus going on 10 years old and still truckin'
Protip: It's not a "sprint" if it lasts 7 weeks
@evan Well, group video + text chat isn't really all that well federated on phones right now and I don't at all miss dialing into multiplayer voice-only conferences for work
@chuck @rauschma I guess a problem was, as a complete newb with a freshly-downloaded image, I didn't even know what rollback for that OS was yet and KDE Plasma was crashing so I just kind of bailed out and tried a different distro :sadness:โ
But, if it works, the whole immutable thing is really, really appealing as a concept
@paun I, for one, welcome my duck-feeding future wherein I yield all meetings to robot overlords
@jonathangulbrandsen I think they covered that in the blog post? You're linking to DIY self-repair resources. They mention that, but they want to have it done as covered by paid-for AppleCare coverage.
Their local third-party repair shop can't / won't do it. And, performing self-repair is pretty much asking for warranty and AppleCare to be invalidated.
@lazerwalker My eyes are so fond of e-ink! I've got a Kindle and a Boox Tab Ultra C, and I keep eyeing up a Palma ๐ค
@lazerwalker Niiice, yeah the price tag on the Palma has definitely been the barrier for me since I already have a couple other devices. But the size just looks so nifty, like perfect to take on a bike ride for a reading break
(I mean there were other reasons to move to #pdx, but XOXO was a biggun)
Also, I appreciate the ever-living heck out of this #xoxofest COVID policy
I'm also, also excited that this is the first festival / conference thing that I could very easily bus or bike or even walk to if I were feeling frisky!
@socketwench Yeah, that's basically where I'm at. I can't expect that anything will stick
@twipped Yeah, that too. I'm kind of expecting we'll have a felon president
You know, there's a part of me who WISHES the Biden administration was shady & cunning enough to actually have rigged a trial against Trump.
But, like, which is it? Biden & Co are too feeble & dumb to wipe own their asses? or Biden & Co are evil geniuses pulling all the strings?
Neither, Trump's just a crook and the system may or may not actually make it stick and Biden doesn't really have much to do with it
But that's a thing I just really don't get about fascists and their fans - their enemies are both scary & strong yet also pathetic & weak depending on the paragraph of the speech.
I mean, actually I do I think I get it, but it just really depresses me
Like, the only thing that makes sense to me is that there are a lot of humans who don't really think things through much and just operate on immediate feelings induced by mouth noises.
And, granted, I find myself occasionally swayed by mouth noises but then my brain kicks in and says "what the fuck that makes no sense"
But it seems like for some folks, their brains never kick in and do that? And that's depressing to me
@mos_8502 Yeah, there's a part of me who thinks that too. But I tend to resist it, because that's also what fascists say about folks they want to crush. But also... oof
I wonder if work would be mad if I took some last minute PTO to devote tomorrow to day-drinking?
@Catvalente maybe a subscription to the New York Times, you can't ever get that cancelled
@tankgrrl weirdly I had a beer from last Christmas left in the fridge? I better take care of that, cheers!
Actually, you know what would be a worse punishment than jail for Trump?
Being forced to do a nationwide anti-rally tour. He just has to stand there for an hour with the mic turned off. Like just venue after venue of folks booing and toasting his misfortune.
It would scramble his egomaniac brain to paste
@scruss I LIKE IT HERE IT'S NICE
@garbados apply the post to skin only, not for internal use
i have work to do, but my executive function just smells like burnt transmission fluid right now
if you've never driven stick, I want to say it smells a little like exploded capacitor but not quite as demonic
continuing to listen to the NPR stream as it switches from the breaking news to Fresh Air because I just want to keep riding this high
I should work on-- aw shit, I burnt the brain clutch again
dangit i wish i could cw retoots
anyway, this song's gonna be stuck in my head now
new startup idea I'll never pursue: QWK packets, for Slack!
@c0debabe huh, I wonder if that'll be easier to get since it doesn't sound like a nasty naughty stimulant per se?
oh good, i remembered alt text on that banger toot
Thisโll be stuck in my head too

"delicious petard" shall be the name of my new chamber music quartet
