Been noticing almost no link sharing on masto so far, which is making me not want to start
Which is cool, because I didn't like using birdplace to share links to begin with anyway. (partly because I used del.icio.us at the time)
Though, if you want to see my links, I'm on Pinboard these days. Mostly flooded with my Twitter favs, though (doh) https://pinboard.in/u:deusx
@sungo Yeah, same thing here. I'm a long, long way from my days of meticulously gardening my tags
Really, what I should do - if I want to share links & think anyone wants to receive them - is set up a gnu social bot on my own domain and let it federate
@sungo Yeah, I used to think that
@Gargron Yeah, though I don't really want to necessarily crap up my main toot stream, because I have been known to share a lot of links :)
Though I will say this is pretty dang funny: "Artist Places Mannequins Around City To Mess With People"
http://www.sadanduseless.com/2017/03/trolling/ https://mastodon.social/media/GEuWEzrssz24K8I3cCk
@sonya @pixelguff I feel like this place needs an "I don't know what I expected" reaction icon, revealed after clicking through the content warning
Poking at setting up my own Mastodon instance and reading through docs - lazy question: any way to turn off new registrations?
@lmorchard@toot.lmorchard.com ahoy there?
Figure it might be fun to play with bots over on my own mastodon instance, so they're easier to quarantine
@lmorchard@toot.lmorchard.com boop boop
@lmorchard@toot.lmorchard.com boop boop toot
@djsundog Yeah, though they don't seem to be going back the other way yet :/ @lmorchard@toot.lmorchard.com
Think I'll refrain from re-tooting all my alien toots, though
Also seems like instances with their own codes of conduct could make for nice enclaves of nice people. Even the nazi's could have their own, and we can block the whole domain @lmorchard@toot.lmorchard.com
This Tweetdeck-a-like UI (the only way I've used Twitter for years) is also making me itchy to add columns for lists & searches
oops i mentioned the birdsite by name
@kevin_redacted Eh, seemed like an implicit taboo from toots I was seeing. Nothing in the rules though I don't think
@b_cavello Wait, that's a thing? Well, they should be able to set up their own thing like I just did!
@b_cavello (and then we can all ignore the whole thing & let them talk amongst themselves)
@psp The whole beauty of this platform is you don't have to rely on this particular instance of it if you get blocked / annoyed by the CoC
@SpaceKatAndromeda *second* playthough? jeebus. I'm still obsessivly meandering through my first :D
@monknomo fwiw, there *is* a Patreon, so it could end up differently.
awoo
(i don't even know what that means but it's fun)
@SpaceKatAndromeda Heh, I'm like 30 hours in but have been exhausting every side quest along the way. Also trying to, like, have all-nighters
@SpaceKatAndromeda er *not* have all-nighters, that is
@SpaceKatAndromeda Oh nice. I ended up just doing a lazy quick start with sara, wouldn't mind having a do-over on that
@SpaceKatAndromeda I did the same thing with the first 3 so it gives me the obsessive feels
See, seriously folks: You can set up your own gnu social instance that respects whatever free speech you want. I just set one up tonight and I'll probably mostly be having intimate conversations with robots so...
@eurasierboy oh shiiiii--
*mom cuts off my phone*
@zane I have so much glee for this
@ballpointcarrot Oh yeah, that's a classic
I mean here's the tough talk: If you want to be a dick with respect to local customs and the server owner says GTFO - you GTFO.
But lucky for everyone, this particular server owner has been such a tremendous mensch that you get to take the software and go buy your own server to run it on and have your own dick party.
@SpaceKatAndromeda Yeah, I was worried about ME:A from the reviews until it became apparent those folks had an agenda not exactly related to the game :/
@fnord I feel weird because I actually really liked the ending, but maybe I'm thinking of the DLC ending. I picked the Synthesis path @SpaceKatAndromeda
@b_cavello Hmm, I thought you could. Should be possible but honestly I haven't tried it yet :/
@fnord Yeah, I can see that... I figured it was the pay off for such an epic crisis. In my head canon, the synthesis ending would have them rebuilding everything better than before @SpaceKatAndromeda
@SpaceKatAndromeda I was kind of really a sucker for the quarian / geth plotline. Kind of hoping they end up in Andromeda DLC
@fnord @SpaceKatAndromeda A lot of why I'm okay with it is possibly because I just told myself my own story at the end because I was in denial :)
@SpaceKatAndromeda Sure thing :) kind of makes me do a kermit flail
@SpaceKatAndromeda Yeah, I was kind of thinking the SAM AI thing was a milder form of the ME3 synthesis ending. And yeah I *just* found the Angaran AI last night, was actually conflicted for a bit on that one @fnord
@obra Oh hey, I forgot you wrote K-9 Mail. I used that a ton :)
@SpaceKatAndromeda That is exactly what I did & thought too hehe
@SpaceKatAndromeda I was like... I kind of hated to "steal" the AI away form the Angarans, but she wanted to be with SAM so, that's what we're doing
@SpaceKatAndromeda Oh man, decisions in these games always stress me out hehe
@kuro miao?
augh. okay, have to stop tinkering and tooting and go to bed. didn't even get any mass effecting in tonight
@b_cavello and thank you too! :D
@qqnosh well actually that's quite fine and i think you're a nice person
@lmorchard@toot.lmorchard.com One last toot - are yer websockets socketed?
Just spent the last hour fighting with my Apache config to find out it was actually working fine the whole time - I was just testing it the wrong way
@b_cavello I should have been! Now I will :)
April Fools! Mastodon is still here suckas
(that joke sounded better in my head)
@BethlehemTheBridegroom I'm tired of it being cold & shitty in Detroit
FWIW I started calling tweets toots back in 2014 - "tiny outburst of text" - even started trying (yet again) to make my own tootr. But this place does it so much better because UX & community matter https://blog.lmorchard.com/tag/tootr/
i may go back and work more on tootr once i wrap my head around the social protocols mastodon uses. mastodon took me an hour to set up (and then 3 hours trying to fix things that weren't broken anyway) - but maybe it could be even simpler for someone who didn't want an instance that scales past a dozen people
@maloki nah, pretty much every day.
@maloki Well, she's still a little standoffish and refuses petting, so I've still got some trust work to do
Working real hard not to crap up my toot stream with political rage porn. I may start an account on my own mastodon instance for that, and not actually encourage anyone to follow
@parataxis are woozles allowed?
Since the uptick in users, this place is feeling a bit like blogging in 2002. That was a fun time.
@pixelguff Haven't used it for very long, but seemed cheap enough to give it a try! http://amzn.to/2nIL9LN
@five *solemn nod* awoo
@modernmodron it is super tiny! kind of amazed it's comfy enough to use with my giant thumbs
@bottitytto Yeah, I'm fairly pleased with it so far, might just keep it in my pocket all the time
@modernmodron that's how I've been playing the mass effects too
Also speaking of climbing, I think I bugged a quest in Mass Effect: Andromeda by climbing a mountain that, in retrospect, was designed not to be climbed.
tempted to start a mastodon instance that's devoted to political rage porn links and screaming catartically into the void. kind if like an internet swear jar
@parataxis I've had good luck pasting / typing full user addresses into the search bar. Like @lmorchard@toot.lmorchard.com
@parataxis (which looks like I just at-ed myself, but is actually me over on my new personal instance)
@edef It's funny because at least half of this is a belief that the thing will work and deciding to use it, right? other half is UX & tech & sustainability & etc
@20Hz imo, this is oddly similar to hiring for a team - if you bring on too many folks at once, you can wreck the culture that makes the place work if you're not careful.
@edef I'm finally getting around to poking under the hood & maybe making some silly bots because it seems more likely there'll be people to play with, for one example
like, what if this is the "Year of Decentralization" finally, because the silos finally managed to annoy enough people? yeah i know, not likely
@edef I kind of flip flop between those groups depending on my attention span :)
@taotetek Haha yeah, you get it
@hauntedlatte Yup, there's a really good one named Tusky
@wavebeem It is also kind of weird that you can thaw out a group of colonists who somehow enlarge your pockets
Reading up on Salmon & PubSubHubbub again and considering writing a "Mastodon without Mastodon" blog post while building a bot.
Like, I've looked at all this tech years ago. But, tinkering with it was less interesting when the audience was smaller / less fun
There's also been a tradition of fun / weird / arty twitter bots since then, so that seems like a keen thing to soak my head in for this space
@thock oh huh, TIL USB3 noise interferes with wifi
so, uh: night vale fans?
