Well, it seems I'm still working at Mozilla today but sweet merciful crap today is an apocalyptic shartnado.

@thegibson Yeah, it's a rather mixed bag overall

@nyquildotorg Well, the cruddy thing is at least some of those side missions have been an attempt to chip away at the funding-from-Google weakness

[subtoot about that one guy (not me) still trying to have a normal workday and meetings after layoffs]

I mean, I guess self-care is important if that's how you want to do it.

@nyquildotorg I believe you are not entirely incorrect there 😅

@nyquildotorg There's also the thing where we exploded in staffing to try to build a mobile phone OS, cancelled that project, but then tried really hard to keep all those good hires doing things to get us somewhere better

@nyquildotorg Nngghh me too. I dogfooded that OS on a few different phones for a long while and was fairly excited for it. It seemed very mission-aligned to me too.

From my position, it looked like it got kind of bound up and ground up by larger industry entities though. Lots of creeping non-mission-aligned things done to get things shipping onto hardware and a general feeling that we were starting to get used as the cost-saving lever against the other mobile OSes.

@nyquildotorg Like, one engineering outcome of that is we were aiming at sub US$30 phone hardware in emerging markets on which practically no one had a decently running OS at the time. Lots of time spent in optimizations before we had a fully-featured package

Think I might just listen to Jesus Jones and Pop Will Eat Itself for the rest of the day since that era's stuck in my head now

Maybe a little EMF, though I'm mad at them about the cheese commercial

@craigmaloney Yeah, and I mean 2020 is kind of a trans-dimensional hypercube of grief

re: layoffs, mozilla

@cwebber Problem with offices is that I think they have multi-year leases (sometimes 5+ years) with termination fees that don't actually save any money. As for the other stuff, 🤷‍♂️

re: layoffs, mozilla

@cwebber @soapdog @ari But also, no user pays for Firefox. And where Firefox does make money is shrinking - and also has been affected by COVID because IIRC, it's tied to some diminishing ad-related search traffic.

Also I may have gone on a weird fugue and created a 90s dance bullshit monster on Spotify

@nyquildotorg Yeah, that was the problem, we didn't start with the $30 devices exactly. We started with mid-level western market stuff and tried applying a shoehorn to pivot. Worked better than expected but still not awesome

I often go on weird playlist-making fugues on Spotify, so an embarrassing number of these are mine and not copied from someone else open.spotify.com/user/lmorchar

Like, hey, how about that time I went on a spree and dug up every version I could find of of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths?

open.spotify.com/playlist/50fv

Or that time I tried finding every cover of "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush and a random assortment of other covers

open.spotify.com/playlist/3JMt

@Wetdryvac I went off a little into goth / EBM weeds a bit, but hopefully it all appeals :)

@thegibson Oh yeah, I think that might actually be the cover that got me started making that playlist :) That and Placebo
