So I managed to only drop one transistor on the floor and flung one LED across the room, but I think I did alright at surface mount soldering with schmoo

A fun thing about remotely attending an in-person work meetup is when you're one of 5 people whose faces appear on big screens behind the main speaker that 20 other people are all staring at.

Trying to maintain a neutral pleasant expression and not wander away from my desk to reveal I'm dressed as a clown in front of my org and my boss' boss

(oh and also this is being recorded, so...)

L'appel du vide manifesting as intrusive thoughts commanding me to moon the whole company on live Zoom

@mood@jorts.horse "we trust you will be pleasant & professional as we traverse this live video stream"

"lmfao making strange faces and spilling coffee all over myself is in my nature"

Was going to stream building this BlueSCSI widget but instead just stayed up late hyperfocusing by myself until it was done. I think I did alright with the SD card slot, which is what made me most nervous

@HunterZ It was honestly not too bad, but then I'd been focusing on practice with a lot of tiny things.

I'd expected to have to use solder paste and a hot air gun, but I was also worried I might melt the plastic parts of the slot.

So, I used a cheap microscope and hand-soldered it. Started by tacking down one of the back corners and triple checking the pin alignment before tacking down an opposite corner, then started on the pins with very very little solder.

Checked and rechecked continuity with a meter and was surprised that it all seemed okay 😅 Seems like it would have been really hard to fix later if I screwed it up first

@HunterZ Oh yeah, that too. I have some rosin paste flux and I just dabbed it over all the pads first. That also kind of helped as temporary glue for the part. Gave it a little wash in 99% isopropyl alcohol after

Also was a little worried that I’d goofed this up when trying to start using it as an external SCSI HD on the Mac, but it just turns out that “.hda.zip” is not the same as “.hda” even if you hide file extensions.

Now, first job is to backup the existing old spinning rust HD inside the beastie

Turns out the hard drive in this Mac Classic was about 40MB and would probably hurt if I dropped it on my foot.

The MicroSD card to which I backed it up is about 570x larger in capacity at 16GB and could be lost between the cracks in my floorboards.

@drwho Thanks! Now I kinda want to do it again ]

Spicy political opinion

You know, whenever I hear stuff about folks throwing around millions & billions on crypto or Elon Musk fucking around with billions in stock, I just think the IRS is not collecting nearly enough tax money from fuckwits

re: Spicy political opinion

I don't care if taking and redistributing $16 billion from a fuckwit would only give fifty bucks to each of 300 million US citizens. The money would be in better hands on average.

@jalefkowit wait... 35mph... on a bicycle? I get a bit concerned when I hit 25 on my e-bike

@jalefkowit Well, I guess more power to 'em but I'd have to have to stop in a hurry. I don't think the spandex or even special shoes helps at that point
