re: Computer gore, floppy diskette death

@maddiefuzz agghh when the greasy thumb swiped the disk :blobsadeyes:

@maya niiiice

@feld don't let your dreams stay dreams

@thegibson @kimmy @crash @Rubi :blobwave: 🍍

@signal9 I keep thinking I should pick up Go again, but it's been years and I never got all that great at it. Got a fold-up board and a couple of bowls of stones though

@pikhq That is super cute! I keep opening pages to buy kits and such for one of those. Sounds like it was fun to build?

@pikhq Eh, the burns are just a nice respectful sacrifice to the angry pixies that'll flow through the circuits

@pikhq Exactly like that! :blobsmile:

@doe i see what you did there

@katexcellence :blobfacepalm: biggest oof

@Kye @alex @anildash also AWOO

@martinweigert@mastodon.social @PeterR@mastodon.social @anildash what "whole thing"? Check and see if your local instance takes donations or sells merch or has a patreon

@_benui@mastodon.gamedev.place @anildash ...no? anildash.com/2012/12/13/the_we

@_benui@mastodon.gamedev.place @anildash Oh, maybe you mean this, since he co-invented NFTs anildash.com/2022/05/16/everyt

@martinweigert@mastodon.social @PeterR@mastodon.social @anildash The scaling model is to divide all those users up by local instances, and you help fund for those

@martinweigert@mastodon.social @PeterR@mastodon.social @anildash The idea is there isn't one big "Mastodon" - it's software used by many people to build a network between many people.

Each node in the network is self-funded, in one way or another. Whether out of pocket from the sysop and/or contributions from the users.

If the network of nodes reaches 100 million user scale, it'll be because this worked. Or it won't. It's not a VC-funded growth-at-all-cost company

Been insisting on rolling my own RSS readers for a few years now as a driver of learning projects in different languages and suchlike. They work but they're all fiddly unfinished projects I'd never put in front of anyone but myself.

Fell down a rabbit hole last night standing up another Tiny Tiny RSS install. I think the last time I did that, it was before Docker existed. So easy to plonk onto a spare PC now.

@katexcellence I feel assaulted by the mildest inconvenience or insinuation that I may be a Problem, gonna hunker down in this trench over here

@mathowie hacking the gibson at the local automall, a grand tradition

I mean, I guess my last go-round at a DIY RSS reader isn't terrible. It's just very my-brain-shaped (and this demo build stopped updating a year ago) lmorchard.github.io/easy-feed-

@256 I had a Treo 650 and I thought reading news via AvantGo and chatting on IRC with it was the Future.

If I don't see toots start rolling in here today or tomorrow with a "masterbatedone" domain name, I'll be very disappointed. Not enough to do it myself, mind you, but surely someone's got the spare time and trollface to do it.

@obra Official app isn't bad. I use Metatext. Both free.

Other folks swear by some of the paid clients, which I've been meaning to check out.

@MrsMouse @68km cw: gore plz

@xurizaemon Alas, this is the way. We'll probably see a lot of this as folks work out how to keep an instance going both financially and personal-sanity-wise

@nolan Hey, thanks for hosting me here for the time I was active. I've since moved mostly over to @lmorchard@hackers.town - would it help if I shut down my account here?

@shanselman That notion is indeed in the ether lately. You wanna buy an Eternal October hoodie to commemorate the season? 😀

customink.com/fundraising/cold

Yeah yeah, :blobfreezing:🍑 is great but have you ever tried mis-applying freedom of assembly to a non-governmental entity and considering that nobody needs to see your face?

@amsomniac i am pounding my clipboard

Also, anyone remember the 2009 Yahoo hackathon in london that got struck by lightning? Just stumbled on this sticker in a box. Pretty sure I follow a non-zero number of folks around here whom I met in person briefly at that event.

@craigmaloney @jalefkowit oof, that was a Very Twitter date

@Vaguery @nelson Dang it, ever since you mentioned it, I started thinking about what a useful ActivityPub social bookmarking thingy would look like. Not sure it'll prompt me to do any tinkering, but I keep thinking about it

@danhon Yup yup, I think I had a BBC Backstage lanyard in that same box

So I had a migraine yesterday and, for some reason, found myself writing "there are no ushers on Mastodon" on my blog

blog.lmorchard.com/2022/11/07/

@slowenough@mastodon.social I've kind of tinkered with that sort of thing a bit, off and on. But, never finished anything (story of my tinkering life).

At one point, I had a thing that filled a SQLite database with fetched feeds and items (inspired by @simon). At another point, I had a thing that just kept a directory of JSON files updated from feeds.

Not exactly , but that kind of sounds like ye olde defunct Yahoo! Pipes.

An app on my phone just said "your network is unstable" and I replied, out loud, "fuck you my child is fine"

@rckenned Ah yeah, 2007... I had already moved onto Mozilla by 2008

@davglass Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's where we met too! :D

@davglass (also, hello!)

@socketwench :chick_chefkiss:

@tithonium Huh, maybe that's how I got the migraine

@rckenned @davglass Augh. I was so mad I missed the Beck thing due to a random leg injury

:oof: So I had a video visit with a sleep apnea doctor scheduled for tomorrow. They call to tell me they can't access my CPAP machine data remotely, so I need to come in with the physical SD card.

I was like, okay, so let's re-schedule tomorrow's visit and I guess we can just make it in-person. And they're like, oh no, we need you to come in with the card today and then you can have the video visit tomorrow.

And I'm like :blobwaitwhat: heh what

Like I guess I can understand maybe the person handling the data is different than the person having the video visit with me, but I'm the same person in both contexts and this request is... suboptimal.

re: Music festival WTF

@thegibson This just hit me as like 50% "hell yeah" and 50% "what in tarnation"
