@simon There were also various "Planet" blogs, reblogging RSS feeds. Like, Planet Mozilla still exists planet.mozilla.org/

@smakofsky@mastodon.social Ah, yeah, I've been on CPAP for close to 20 years now. Started pretty early with a pretty severe case. Apnea & heart trouble (possibly in part from the apnea) run in the family

@simon Could be a job for lists on Mastodon eventually. But, failing that, it could be an interesting job for a bot that retoots participants. Maybe slightly less handy without quote-retoots

@anjune Hah, is that a podcast tuner running on the ole amiga?

Ah yes, performing the gravitas-rich act of "tweeting" and "retweeting" to ridicule the absurdity of a thing called "tooting" - truly we live in a serious age.

@jeremybmerrill@journa.host @Curator @MattHodges@mastodon.social @ken @simon @danhon yeah, pretty sure federated view is an aggregate of all public posts seen by the server.

So, given a single user, that'll be just that user's followed accounts sending in content.

might also include posts you've manually navigated to and interacted with, but it's been awhile since i looked at that code

@danhon @MattHodges@mastodon.social @ken @simon @Curator @jeremybmerrill@journa.host oh yeah and it'll include replies and reactions to your posts i think? Basically, the server has to have had a reason to receive the content, there is no general copying around of content network-wide

@Curator @ken @jeremybmerrill@journa.host @trisweb @MattHodges@mastodon.social @danhon @simon a browser extension would be great here, for smoothing over some of those cross-server hitches. Had a notion to make one that knew your home server and could auto-fill or otherwise finesse all those interactions on away servers

@ricmac Yeah, there's potential for a Tumblr to be an even richer ActivityPub participant than Mastodon.

I keep wanting to tinker with more of the ensemble of actors & verbs in the standard, feel like we're really only using a small slice of what it can do.

@ben At first I read "changing pad" as "charging pad" and this seemed very cyberpunk at first

@mike Well, there are definitely fires, but also s'mores

@hungry :blobwave: 🍍 Welcome!

@Emilynussbaum Break your chains of gravitas, be free! :blobtea:

re: Pinboard brittleness

@nelson @brainwane An irony is I keep thinking about pinboard and if/whether fediverse instances could shake out to be little nodes of livelihood for some folks.

@thegibson there are too many stars and stripes in that image to be up to any good

Feeling really positive about seeing folks show up on the fediverse. Got lots of ideas brewing in my noggin. Feeling somewhat negative that I very rarely finish anything, so trying to moderate the giddiness.

Sort of landing on trying to be nice to people if nothing else.

And trying not to projectile vomit special-interest enthusiasm too vigorously.

@SuperTeece A great beverage for both sadness and joy!

Thinking about maybe building small things that could do fediverse-shaped activities but run as tiny services on small hosts or as cloud functions.

@jrconlin Yeah, that's most of my reason behind whatever choice of language & whatnot in projects. If I'm not going to finish much, can I at least have learned something before I abandon it? 😅

@mythmon Ah, nice... I was under an impression that was go's turf, but I kind of like Rust better

I got a copy of Hands-on Rust for my birthday and been meaning to write about it on my blog.

I'm about 1/2 way through it and think it's a neat book. The focus is on building up a roguelike dungeon crawler game and picking up some Rust along the way.

Feels a tiny bit like magazine type-in listings from the old days. Also feels a tiny bit like my Hacking RSS & Atom book I wrote back in 2006 - little projects to play with and learn. Kind of makes me want to write another one.

@maya I got a lot of love for glitch

@Vaguery no? (yes.)

Oh hey, looks like @herberticus wrote this book. Hi! :blobwave:

@herberticus Only thing it's missing is one of those little checksum proofreading utils they used to print in the back of the magazine to check for typos :)

@herberticus The source is definitely handy to have in a git repo, especially since we don't get CDs with books anymore. 👴 Mostly trying to stick to typing it all in so I can refresh myself on all the Rust syntax.

A sequel to the book would be nice, but can definitely understand that a sequel to yourself takes priority!

@herberticus (also congrats! :) )

@joeld yes and email it to me

@NotASpaceLizard Look for the "About" link in the footer nav of your server. For you, it looks like this link

mastodon.online/about

@NotASpaceLizard And it looks like your server has a patreon for funding (which also happens to fund the Mastodon software project too!)

patreon.com/mastodon

@danhon tl;dr: my response is kind of in the "try to learn it" camp, but also examine motivations & expectations all around. Why would anyone want to be here? What makes anyone want to improve the software?

blog.lmorchard.com/2022/11/07/

To my mild shame, I was today years old when I realized that Matthew Mercer of Critical Role fame voiced Yusuke Kitagawa of Persona 5 fame.

@banjofox2 Well, I mean that's fair. But I'm a fan of both Critical Role and Personal 5, so it seems like I could have maybe stumbled upon that fact sooner 😅

@danhon I think there's also a tension between "open source is a thankless vocation" vs "let's make users' lives better" that asks a lot of folks' enthusiasm in building things

@banjofox2 I am, alas, beyond such help

@Nicole :blobwave: sometimes I wish mastodon supported QWK packets

@abr Yeah, been doing a bunch of go at work lately, too, and this all sounds like a familiar tune

@abr :blobcry: This also sounds very, very familiar haha

@abr Like, half the reason I'd consider doing a side project in golang is to skill up in solving these problems because we use it at work 😅 But I think I'd enjoy the Rust experience better

re: Fedi tip: You can be lazy and just reference GIF memes 😉

@yuki2501 eric-wareheim-dressed-like-carl-sagan-mind-blown.gif

@RetroZo You might appreciate this slice of 1950's electromechanical action in my basement

@danhon Yeah, I think I'm kind of hoping for something a little in between those two poles. I bought my first iPhone this year and don't like it a whole lot, which I realize makes me an outlier.

@RetroZo It makes a lot of noise and has a lot of blinkenlights

@zkat My last foray into activitypub stuff was using AWS Lambda functions in node, but that was... 😅 4 years ago.

Thanks to the gotosocial pointer though. I might even try tinkering in both Rust & Go and see how far I get on a given weekend

@snowchyld @SuperTeece oh hey, btw, i just found a photo of my bottle of malort and a flattering selfie

@snowchyld @SuperTeece (i probably should have put a CW on that)

@snowchyld @SuperTeece The mouthfeel is kind of like that one time in jr high when I tried siphoning leaded gasoline from an old lawn mower. It's very nostalgic.

@AustynTranslation (7-year-old voice) does your phone have games on it?

I should make this part of my office less interesting for Cosmo

It's like, warm and has interesting string toys to play with and it makes me jump up and chase him around when he starts gnawing on ethernet cables.
