@MirrorAyako Dang, I miss being in reception range of an H&I station for all that Trek
@jan @whattamess @drewharwell@mastodon.social hard to perform those clicks if you're fired and no longer have access. That said, it's not a bad idea to have multiple profiles, especially if one is work-related
@stevenf Have you seen Secure Scuttlebutt?
Been awhile since I tinkered with it, but IIRC it was designed in part by hackers living on boats.
You periodically connect to the network (e.g. when you come to shore) and trade batches of updates with followed pub nodes, both the stuff you want to send and stuff from folks you follow.

@skippy @stevenf Well, sure, SSB isn't live chat but it's more like letter-writing in pace for folks who spend time away from the live network.
Also, like those old BBS QWK packets stevenf mentioned: folks would often dial in to download an update in the morning, spend the day reading and replying, upload their bundle by dinner time.
Was listening to a tech news podcast. One of the guests said they forgot on what Mastodon server they’d signed up and had to ask some folks out of band to dig up some old toots for a reminder. The other guests were like "hmm yes this is complicated"
And I'm like... Maybe you should give a shit and remember. Especially you, expert guest on a tech podcast. Like you know where your house or apartment is, you know where you parked your car (usually). You give a shit about those, give a shit about on whose server-couch you're crashing.
Maybe not giving a shit about where your eyeballs are harvested is a big reason we're in so many messes?
And then they talked about how fraught it is that these Mastodon servers are run by unpaid volunteers - and I'm like yeah so the fuckin least you can do is honor that work by remembering where you signed up and maybe toss a coin to your hosts sometime.
I know it’s a good thing to smooth over the rough edges of Mastodon and Fediverse UX, but these are basic things. And if remembering where you signed up is too steep a hill to climb, maybe the network shouldn’t work so hard to acquire or retain that particular participant
Like seriously, I know, this software has weird edges and shapes. But knowing where you put your stuff, who’s taking care of it for you, and who else is in the space with you - these are basic essential things.
If you’re demanding that these get elided away and handled with no care or cost on your part… well, then your expectations are part of the problem.
Someone will do it for you and sell access to you and things won’t get better.
A thing I think about all the time with regards to online spaces: the movie Cocoon (1985), where old folks take a dip in a pool containing weird giant alien eggs.
The old folks get younger and they never really ask how it works, for most of the story. They start trying to crack open the eggs. They get caught by the hosts - and it’s revealed that the rejuvenated old humans have been literally stealing life from other beings.
This stuck with me since I was 10. Like, when you wander into a thing that’s open and useful to you, maybe look around & learn about it. Find out who and why. Don’t just wade in and soak up the free vibes and expect it’s all there for special old you
@danhon i think they were greatest generation, but not sure. Been trying to weed boomer out of my lingo, though, since performative entitled obstinacy transcends age
@phlash yeah, i guess what set me off in part is that these were generally smart tech folks who do often advise caution and attention on these sorts of things - but somehow Mastodon is more confusing than password managers, cryptocurrency, and offsite data backup strategies they’ve talked about before
Lunch for Anchovy, still quite cold today but her space has been holding in the mid-70Fs
Also trying to get increasing amounts of food into her. Like other cats I’ve taken care of, for some reason mounding up the food makes her think it’s interesting to start eating again. Could also be I’m keeping it from freezing 🥶
