@thedorismith I feel like half my timeline says "clicking favorite / like / star does nothing, please boost" and the other half says "all these boosts are noise". Seems like there's a bit of a struggle going on here. 😩

@thedorismith I think I've been boosting a few more things lately, but I tend to refrain for fear of annoying folks with random spam. I definitely hit "like" a lot more, I'm pretty uhh pro-anti-viral

@daniel You seem like you're enthusiastic about webrings - want to join my ring? :) fediverse-webring-enthusiasts.

@ramsey Hello, FormMail, my old friend, I've come to talk with you again

Oof, I'm still enamored with space exploration, have been since I was a little kid. But, the older I get, the more my vibe is harshed by the stark notion that sticking yourself in an artificial life support system is enslavement to whomever owns the oxygen valve.

againstmars.substack.com/p/eco

Like I would never, ever want to step foot on an interplanetary space craft owned by a private individual, unless that individual were me or a very close trusted friend. An employer might get me, but it's a real dicey situation. Maybe a co-op or group with a history of shared governance. Rocket-propelled terrariums are less appealing to me these days

idlewords.com/2023/1/why_not_m

I guess the situation is practically similar to being stuck on a boat out in the middle of the ocean, insofar as you're probably not jumping ship and swimming to shore. Folks take those jobs all the time, voluntarily even. I wouldn't.

@nami_wiki Probably not very different, except in degree of duration? I'd expect a space craft or station would be away from Earth for months or years or basically a lifetime. An aircraft would have more frequent contact with the ground, but yeah not much different

@nami_wiki Yeah, I think my unease with it is a threshold crossing of degrees. At least on earth, there are more options for re-constituting with whom you're engaged in mutual reliance.

On mars or in space, the death comes in minutes or hours rather than weeks, if the boss pulls the plug. Then, I guess you're hoping the boss refrains from that because eventually they need contact with wider civilization who ideally offers consequences for that.

@kasei Yeah, I think the tipping point for me is the immediacy of the grip that a space-boss would have. At least on earth, there's a sense of a little literal breathing room and more options

@kusuriya FWIW, I've had a TS4 with an M1 Macbook Pro for a bunch of months now. It's working mostly great for me, except I can never quite seem to keep the wired ethernet working. Oh yeah, and occasionally it decides its time to make a bunch of coil-whine noises 🤷‍♂️

@mdhughes I guess that's the thing, space looks like all Bligh no Picard right now

@lordbowlich @brennen @kasei Unfortunately, Star Trek is the source of my childhood attachment 😅

@mdhughes Yeah, as dangerous as it seems, the Expanse universe seems like a more realistic space scenario. Especially, IIRC, a lot of the best ships were crewed by found family & polycules who actually cared about each other

Like, maybe survival in space is best when you actually love your crewmates?

@quephird @aredridel@kolektiva.social Is this a Wendy Carlos documentary?

@maddiefuzz I keep thinking I really need a 3D printer, but haven't quite yet taken the plunge

passing of a family member, facebook

Just got the news that my Grandma Bea on my Dad's side passed away this week at 92. My grief on this is complicated, as such things go. (tl;dr: we grew apart, i'm not great at family, but she was a good grandma)

I'm also sad/mad that just about the only way I can get news or reach out to family about this is through Facebook.

re: passing of a family member, facebook

Also, because I'm bad at family, I think I've just kind of compartmentalized a bunch of stuff away. But, visiting Facebook opens a lot of compartments.

re: passing of a family member, facebook

Part of why I stopped using Facebook - besides that it's, you know, Facebook - was to excise a lot of shitty conversations from my life, many of which involved family and friends. The family & friends kept on conversating there, though. So, it's still an attractive FOMO-powered nuisance for me.

But also, like, yeah, I've actually missed out on a bunch of stuff, as feared.

I’m on a walk and there’s a kid here in the park dressed like Luigi. Green hat with an L, green shirt, overalls. Just walking with a bud. I feel taking a picture would be intrusive

Also, lately on walks, I’ve been bringing little containers of peanuts and cat kibble for crows. They know me now. They swoop past me to land on nearby cars and trash cans and stare pointedly. It’s like Pokemon Go except I keep pausing to resolve encounters by dropping tiny piles of food.

@joshua One of my Pandemic Times goals was to be Known by Crows and it's working out splendidly!

🤔 If I drop a tiny pile of food when a crow encounters me, does that make me the encounter? Who gets the XP here?

@maddiefuzz ooof, this is why my Atari Tempest sits broken for years

@evan I try to get out daily, but really only manage a few times per week. I do notice the difference, though, and have been starting to note whether or not I walked in my "mental weather report" when I sit down to write morning pages

@KevinLikesMaps Well, I mean, they're not called "mental health walks" because the mental health is in fine shape lending itself to remember to leave the house 😅

@rgegriff Heh, I keep doing this in lieu of actually learning kubernetes. I should get around to that

I realize this is like drawing a conjuring circle for nerds on the floor, but: If I wanted to build a pfSense box for my gigabit-internet home office network... what's a good bit of hardware for that these days?

@BlackAzizAnansi I mean, I feel like a dirty McDonald's is one of the safer places for avoiding covid. But then, that might just be a comment on your original question re: my mental health

@mjgardner I feel like I've meta-sniped you

@zrail I'm also half-heartedly looking for a new NAS / hobby server to replace an ageing Synology DS214, but thinking the router & the NAS should be physically separate devices. Maybe I should just get two used old machines

Whenever I see "FSD", I don't think of Tesla, I think I need to play Elite Dangerous again

@mjgardner It's just a circular firing squad of nerds 😅

re: oblique reference to crass metaphor

re: hot take about jobs and hobbies

@e_er1n @astrid I have gone through several cycles of "if only I could get paid do to this thing about which I'm enthusiastic as a side project..." leading to "oh no, I need to do something to take my mind off what they pay me to do..."
