Watching The Future is a Dead Mall - Decentraland and the Metaverse from Dan Olson. Laughing, crying, maybe threw up a little in my mouth.
I can't believe these times we're living in where we can have QuickTime VR (1995) combined with The Mind's Eye on VHS (1990) for only like $500m
Seriously, all this Metaverse shit makes me want to raise taxes and manufacture Molotov cocktails.
Well, that and all the other manifold fuckery currently in progress
I mean, somebody at Lindt Chocolate actually decided that this almost literal QuickTime VR experience was it, Chief.
I remember making something like this in Shockwave back in the 90s / early 2000s. It wasn't a good idea even then
The real hero of this documentary is Dan Olson's cat on the couch
I still cling to the notion that morons with too much money saw what folks were doing in Animal Crossing in Spring / Summer 2020 and lost their minds. Thus, The Metaverse
@phrawzty π€ Iβd better get on those language lessons
@craigmaloney Like I don't want to be a judgemental jerk, but: at a certain point, by continuing to hang out there, folks make themselves the mass contributing to black hole of network effect keeping other folks drawn in.
Like not only are you the product, you are that product
@davew@mastodon.social Pointcast... now that's a name I haven't thought about in many years
@davew@mastodon.social I'm pretty sure Pointcast is what pulled me into interest in RSS too - after (I think?) a frustrated period of trying to understand NewsML & SGML back in like 2000 or so
π€ I wonder if I should add "experienced with shepherding 100+ flaky parallel integration & unit test jobs toward successful completion on every commit to a project" to my resume? Like, the patience alone is an acquired skill
@danhon @mhoye@mastodon.social As a homeowner who has dealt with an invasion of bunnymen to abscond with large quantities of asbestos, you have my condolences
@fluffy ohh itβs been a lil while since last i played with python, i forgot how comfy i find it
