@phillmv Yeah, a protocol with a waitlist smells real funny to me 🤷♂️

@thegibson @phillmv I'm kind of suspended between snark and shrug, seems early yet but also the hype already looks tiring. Probably best to let it simmer before trying to tinker
You know, some days I'm very tired with it being early days. We should have some later days for awhile, as a vacation or a national holiday or something.
@CAETFOOD knock knock who's there PIZZA MAGIC
@craigmaloney That screen used to make me happy (sigh)
Just saw someone talk about a fapping alert in a chat channel and it took me entirely too long to decode the intended meaning
Thinking more about my toot yesterday on "moving" instances - in particular about @aurynn's point about imports and moderation...
I host my own Mastodon instance. But, I only use it to screw around and learn. My "real" tooting happens here on hackers.town.
This is surprising. I've long advocated DIY, self-hosting, and generally owning one's own web.
But, hackers.town is a good place with good folks and good moderation. I'd feel bad if I got kicked out. So, I'd rather not bring shame upon my instance.
I'm not sure I'd be as careful from my own domain. 😅 So, it's valuable to have a check on my bullshit.
Not every instance is like this, but many are. I think this is a feature not offered by social media protocols focused on individual identity. I don't think you get it on impersonally-large platforms, either.
Like, why would I want a "portable identity" if part of the identity is "hackers.town hasn't kicked him out yet"?
Could maybe accomplish something similar with a system that does badges or endorsements or verification? PressCheck.org attempts this, and I vaguely wanted to attempt that with my webring thing.
But, it's not as immediate as the thing that comes after my tootin' name.
@mwl Yeah, that's where I think the personal web page thing shines, even if it's just a DIY linktree thing. My lmorchard.com has been a static web page on S3 for at least a decade, so that's pretty reliable
@malwaretech 🤷♂️ The code review used to take days and add-ons would still hijack the search bar and harvest traffic. It's an improvement at least
