Tempting
And it's not available, but I kind of wanted to register "gz.zip" so I could have the domain "jpg.tar.gz.zip"
Would a JPG that's tar'd, gzip'd, and then zip'd actually get larger? I'd assume so, but I've never checked. Also I probably could have checked faster than it took me to type this toot, but I didn't.
@maddiefuzz i just made grabby hands at my screen for the dreamcast box 👁️
@jm3 Well, it kind of settled down to an estimate of 10 minutes after 12 minutes or so, then took another 5 minutes 🤷♂️
So I got an ancient copy of the DALL·E Mini code and trained model running in a basement VM.
I asked it to generate "the github mascot mona eating a hotdog" - and I'm actually pretty happy with what it came up with, aesthetically speaking?
Like, I know the current state of the art is generating astonishing photo-realistic images and illustrations ripped directly from the parallel universe brains of living artists.
But, I want janky-ass imagery for use in my personal projects.
@wohali I am suddenly very interested in this narrative!
The Onion: "New Twitter CEO Asked To Watch ‘The Matrix’ As Part Of Onboarding Process"
https://www.theonion.com/new-twitter-ceo-asked-to-watch-the-matrix-as-part-of-1850432993
The machine on which I'm running this dalle-mini VM has no GPU, so it's crunching about one of these images out every 30 min or so through sheer CPU grit
@maddiefuzz (i need to actually finish that game, someday)
A thing I'm sort of musing over is that there's a bunch of hubbub right now about AI and how mega-corps are flailing around with it.
But, I also expect this stuff will get easier & easier to run on personal computers? Like, DIY AI fuckery will reach epic levels sooner than later? Maybe some of that will be a good thing. At the very least, a bunch of weird things.
@sungo Yeah, been thinking this way for awhile and that doc really furthers the line of thought
Less thinking about how some corpo music generator will replace Drake - and more thinking about how a bored 13-year-old will build a Drake-replacement-machine at home and shitpost from it for the lulz.
I mean a kid built a nuclear reactor in a shed, back in the 90s. DIY AI can't be that hard.
I think the main reason we didn't end up with nuclear reactors in every shed is that social media wasn't really much of a thing in the 90s.
@tankgrrl Yeah, a lot of stupid feats are what I'm hoping to see, though ideally without all the self-irradiation
@GrantMeStrength That does seem to be rapidly changing, though. Like, I downloaded an 8.14GB model and ran it on my MacBook to get interesting text generated from prompts

@ryanrandall Yeah, I don't disagree :)
@cypnk oil remove shred and tear, radiation vapor air...
So, I followed @stlhood 's "The complete idiot's guide to basically running ChatGPT on your own laptop for free" and asked it to tell me a story. Not the best thing ever, but also not the worst...
Human:tell me a story about going to a skinny puppy concert and hearing the song "assimilate"
Assistant: I went to a Skinny Puppy concert with my friend, and we were both excited to hear their new music. As soon as they started playing, we knew that this was going to be an incredible experience. The first song they played was "Assimilate," and the energy in the room was electric.
The lights flashed and the rhythm pounded through my body. I closed my eyes and let myself get lost in the music. When the lyrics began, I felt a chill run down my spine: "You're gonna assimilate / You're gonna like it." The song was intense and eerie, but also mesmerizing.
My friend was dancing wildly, and I couldn't help but join in. We both felt like we were part of something bigger than ourselves – something that transcended the mundane world around us. As the song ended, I looked over at my friend and we shared a knowing smile. This was going to be a night we would never forget.
I mean it's totally making shit up as expected, but it's at least coherent bullshit on a laptop?
Human:Oil remove shred and tear radiation vapor
Assistant: I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "oil remove shred and tear radiation vapor". Can you please provide more context or rephrase your request?
Human:It's the fear so unclear man in motion going nowhere
Assistant: This is a line from the Skinny Puppy song "Assimilate". The full verse goes:
"You're gonna assimilate / You're gonna like it / Fear so unclear, man in motion going nowhere."
This line speaks to the anxiety and uncertainty that can come with change or new experiences. It suggests that we may need to face our fears and embrace the unknown if we want to move forward. At the same time, it acknowledges the difficulty of doing so and the sense of being stuck in a cycle of indecision or stagnation.
Also I think it got confused and switched from Skinny Puppy to VNV Nation:
The news they bring is nothing new, but it's hard to ignore the things we see. The radiation spreading far and wide, causing chaos in our lives.
We need a change, a way to break free from this cycle. We need to rise up and take control, to make our voices heard and bring about some real.
We need to stand together, to show the world we won't be defeated. We'll rise above the fear and the pain, to find a better place.
So let's spread the word, let's stand united and strong. Let's take back what's rightfully ours, to make a brighter future shine.
We won't be held down, we won't give up without a fight. We'll rise above this darkness and find the light.
I have no good reason for this gadget, but I want it
@GrantMeStrength Eh, Doom Eternal took up 80Gb on my drive, and I grew up with a 300 baud modem 🤷♂️ 😅
@elithebearded @scruss My PocketCHIP is in a drawer right now, but for a couple of years it sat on my desk running PICO-8 demos non-stop
