@mykie First thing I'd do is open it up and look for anything obviously burnt or crispy, any capacitor cans that look a lil top-bulgy. (Oh and if anything smells fishy or demonic, that could be failed capacitors which can literally go flash & pop)

If it's got a separate power supply, I'd use a multi-meter to check the output voltages on the plug meant to socket into the computer. Like, original C64 power supplies were notorious for failing in a way that sent way too much voltage

Sometimes you have to take a good look at yourself in the mirror and decide: Am I an Oscilloscope Person?

Because you can always step back from that threshold and decide you want something different from life than Oscilloscopes. Once you've taken the first step, though, things get harder

@jpf You know, by measuring the right signal source, you could probably visualize your position on the topic using an Oscilloscope

@danhon hand me your phone for a sec so I can get that image

Heh, welp: On the same day that a replacement for drive 3 of 4 from Seagate arrived, drive 4 of 4 appears to be on the way out. This pattern of error alerts from my NAS is very familiar, now. 😅

On one hand, it's pretty rude that 4 of 4 hard drives I bought from Seagate this year all failed over the course of 9 months.

I guess they were polite enough to take their turns and allow me to secure my backups and repair my RAID array in between each failure, though?

@randomgeek Hmm, this is neato!

This @fediforum thing looks like it's going to be pretty neato. Got myself a ticket. Haven't been to a conference in a long while, let alone a virtual unconference.

@randomgeek Yeah, I tend to find the single-column thing way too limiting, like peeking through a keyhole

I feel like there's a small pea-sized hunk of the visual hardware in my brain that I worked very hard to develop in the 90s

These days, it's only used occasionally to instantly view 3D images posted by the @magic_aye account

@cinebox @gsuberland That tape I thought was Bon Jovi turned out to be Cosmi's Forbidden Forest for Commodore 64

@theruran A gentle, quiet, yet ominous sonorous "ding" from the phone in my pocket invokes instant dread

@jpf Yeah, you can get some 100Mhz Oscilloscopes for under $500 I think
