Bigod 20 covering Madonna's "Like a Prayer" makes me just a little bit stompy

That thing where I'm on a roll with a side project and there are other things to which I should attend but I distrust myself not to completely abandon the side project and never come back to it if I don't keep grinding away at it

But, of course, if I don't take a break from the side project at some point, I will burn out on it and completely abandon it

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people that computers and algorithms and AI models are somehow neutral & objective

Also, I'm currently reading A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine and just ran across this fabulous passage from the main character's ruminations:

"Thought again of the City as an algorithm: considered, for the first time clearly, that no algorithm was innocent of its designers. It couldn't be. There was an originating purpose for an algorithm, however distant in its past - a reason some human person made it, even if it had evolved and folded in on itself and transformed. A City run by Ten Pearl's algorithm had Ten Pearl's initial interests embedded in it. A City run by an algorithm designed to respond to Teixcalaanli desires was not innocent of those same Teixcalaanli desires, magnified, twisted by machine learning."

INCOMING

re: us politics

(and by incoming i mean a nice paper package will soon arrive with which i can vote from the comfort of our kitchen bar in an election about which i am entirely calm and sanguine)

Wow, this is just... wow.

"[Meta] says it will restrict any image, video, or text post that “identifies a problem that impacts people and is caused by the action or inaction of others,” which is an incredibly wide swath of content. If you speak about these things on Meta, your reach will be limited and your account will be surfaced to fewer people."

Sharing this from @pluralistic if only to get to the "read-receipts-are-you-kidding-me-seriously-fuck-that-noise" anchor link ID in front of more folks.

"Using RSS is a chance to visit a utopian future in which the platforms have no power, and all power is vested in publishers, who get to decide what to publish, and in readers, who have total control over what they read and how, without leaking any personal information through the simple act of reading."

So, Didthis is shutting down next month. It's that hobby-blogging service I was working on from last summer until earlier this year.

Official word is "We believe the vision for Didthis - a healthy space for hobbyists to capture and share their projects - is valuable and important. However, we weren’t able to find a path forward for Didthis in the Mozilla ecosystem at this time."

I hustled last week to bang together an exporter service and we just deployed it. Hopefully that helps folks airlift their stuff out before the end.

Rather bitter sweet, I really liked working on it and we had big notions for the thing. But, it was a bit of an exploration in an already crowded space. So, yeah.

One of the things I really wish we'd gotten to doing was trying to hook Didthis up to the fediverse.

But, Mozilla steering away from the fediverse in general kind of put the brakes on that 😅

@cederbs somehow, everything in that picture looks like it's going to fall over

@maddiefuzz I have one of those, but I did find it very fussy about what keyboard would work with it. I went through a half-dozen or so before I found one in my stash. Might have to do with power?

@jalefkowit Yup, Logitech C920, as long as you're not a fancy vlogger

@patrickleavy I don't know the folks behind Newsblur personally, though I have had favorable interactions with Samuel Clay on Twitter in the past. I'd say they're good folks at Newsblur who very probably aren't monetizing their data. It's a tiny team, could probably drop an email to ask for confirmation.

@jalefkowit Gotta chase that bokeh

@aud Hah, yeah, I think I bounced off a few Canonical jobs over the years when I saw those questions. Looks to be standard for all their postings
